Well, the bad news is that "Gunsmoke" Season 1 is now off the Paramount release schedule for now. Let's hope it's just a delay. And while Digital Bits had the news a while back, TV Shows On DVD makes it official today that "Baa Baa Black Sheep" has been rescued from the "one and done" category of Universal releases in 2005, although this is just for the remainder of Season 1. http://www.tvshowsondvd.com/newsitem.cfm?NewsID=7174 Why don't they split up season 1 back in 2005? Too bad for "Gunsmoke"!

Universal was clearly hedging their bets on how well "Baa Baa Black Sheep" would sell back in 2005. I think also the game plan was that since the series lasted in effect 1.5 seasons, the idea was to spread it out in three equal sets of volumes rather than a full season 1 in one set and a full season 2 set. Sales of "Volume 1", which was the pilot movie and the first ten episodes were not that high like many Universal titles released in 2005 during the dreaded days of DVD-18s and bad pressings. But "Volume 2" and "Volume 3" I understand were released in France and other R2 markets, which is probably why eventually they figured they'd get back to at it some point in the R1 market. Perhaps the good sales of "Wild, Wild West" from Paramount convinced them that some more Robert Conrad stuff would sell? At any rate, I'm glad that this show is getting more out, along with another 2005 abandoned title "Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew Mysteries" (But please oh please, let the wait for more of "Dragnet" and "Adam-12" come to an end!!!!) Conrad is still popular in America, South America and in France for the people who used to watch his 1960's and 1970's shows and I am sure they can easily release anything with him: "The D.A.", "Assignment Vienna", "Centennial".

Open Channel D! Some optimistic news concerning THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E. Robert Vaughn and David McCallum are paid by Warner Bros. to record extras for the DVDs. Click to this link: http://www.tvshowsondvd.com/newsitem.cfm?NewsID=7190 Take a look at GUNSMOKE artwork:

The key in the story is that *Warner* was paying Vaughn to do that. I recall that when Anchor Bay was trying to put together their release, Vaughn was supposedly recruited for extras on that, before Warner's suit (justified IMO, because Warner clearly owns the rights as inheritors of the MGM TV library) put a halt to that project. I hope for UNCLE fans it's true that Warner is getting off their behinds to do this show. Now all that would be left is for them to get to "The FBI"! Logically, the last term of 2007 (October-December) will see the first season of THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E.--my guess it is planned for Christmas time. Hoping it will be a complete season set and not a splitted up season set.

Once *again* I get a rude reminder of the idiocy of double-sided discs from Fox with their high defective pressing rate. I waited nine months before I got around to watching the two seasons of "Hill Street Blues" on DVD that I'd bought discounted months ago, and tonight I find a defective disc halfway through Season 2 which like the defective issues I have had with "Big Valley" and "Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea" will necessitate a prompt new purchase of a new set tomorrow. Some might ask why bother doing this if it affects only 30 seconds of one episode in a set but to me there's a principle involved where I EXPECT nothing but high quality in an official set, and that means being able to see an episode unfold in pristine quality with no glitches. Fox should hang their head in shame for sticking with this, and I think I am NOT going to get their $200 "Land Of The Giants" set beacuse I am not going to kill myself blitzing through all 51 episodes just to make sure I didn't get stuck with another defective disc in the middle of the set. I still reel at the thought of a $200.00 price tag for bottom of the barrel Irwin Allen. Appalling. But GUNSMOKE season 1 looks like a real nice release, and a true time capsule of it's hayday. Will buy on sight.

Will buy on sight. Same feeling here, Steven: GUNSMOKE will light my summer. GUNSMOKE and ALFRED HITCHCOCK PRESENTS were the best shows of the mid-1950's in their categories--that's why I used to state: from 1955 to 1975, it's all good. And Eric, I agree with you concerning the consumer's right for decent quality.

Let me remind you this thread deal with "vintage" (1955-1975) classic series only. Everything that start from the 1980's don't belong to this thread. Keep in mind that, gentlemen.

We should all moderate our own threads so well... What made all of the "classsic TV" threads so much fun (for me, at least) was the openness, not being reprimanded when there was a shift in the conversation (different than a "hijacking") I agree with you. But 1990's-2000's series are mostly contemporary. By vintage, I imply from the lost Hollywood, the history of television.
