Powell's theme that sounds like Conan is actually closer to an old English folk melody that VW used in one of his works and ELP used in Touch & Go (song from the '80s).

And "Masquerade" from The Phantom of the Opera. smile

Which Powell theme is this, specifically, and which specific VW melody is it similiar to? I am very curious about this, especially since HTTYD2 reminds me over and over of VW in general.

I don't have pictures, but the front is exactly the same, just in a booklet befitting a jewel case. The most notable aspect of the back it has the "Sony Classical" logo on it, as well as a 20th track not on the US version. Other than that, they're pretty much identical in artwork.

BTW, I got my jewel case and I'm not gonna lie, for a score like this it's worth the extra cost. smile Now it sits happily on my CD shelf with other jewel cases and feels like it fits in with everyone.

Saw the film today. both movie and score were incredible. Couple cues that I wish found their way into the CD as they are quieter more reflective variations of Valka's and hiccup's theme. Maybe an expanded score on the horizon.

Anyhow, for me, 9.5/10 for the film. The only thing I wish they did was make it a little longer and lingered on a couple quieter scenes. It was very briskly paced film which isn't a bad thing but when the direction and acting is so good, you want to savor those moments before the actions takes hold.

I assume the end credits was a post production cut and paste job from the existing score? Anyone know which tracks make up the end credits?

On the album I found repeating Dragon Racing makes a great end credit suite of sorts. Actually crossfade that with Flying With Mother you would swear it was the end credits!

I heard some of the EC music was taken from alternates/film versions...

My review of both the film and score are now up at Movie Music Musings. Like most people in this thread, I loved both a great deal (though you'll be disappointed if you're hoping for an in-depth analysis of the CD packaging). Here's the link:

Thanks, and I'd love to hear any of your thoughts!

This score needs to be nominated for an Oscar right now.

Whilst the sequel is not a turkey like BABErazzIG IN THE CITY, it aint no EMPIRE STRIKES BACK.

The first film was and will always remain a unique, magical, and moving motion picture experience. THe score is already a certified classic.

"2" really adds little to the saga and repeats much of "1". The flying scenes - so thrilling in "1'
- come off as repetitious and boring here.
But, it is an honorable film, made with good intentions (unlike the cynical, degrading sequels currently playing)
The best thing about the (unneccessary) "2" is we get to hear more of John Powell's amazing music.
I hope they dont make anymore in the series. Let it be , Dreamworks

This score needs to be nominated for an Oscar right now.

Does it even qualify, given how much of it is based on melodies from the first score?

Couldn't disagree more. The aerial sequence/montage during the ride with Valka was utterly amazing. Narratively it's fairly straightforward but it does develop the characters and their relationships further.

Powell composed a lot of new material and save for the opening track which is like a recap of the previous films main themes, much of this score is original with only quotes of the other material.

I thought the rule against that was only in place very briefly, so that it blocked The Two Towers from being nominated, but it was gone by the following year, when Return of the King was nominated and won.
