He does have something much more interesting to tackle:

The Cowboys - complete!

listening now to this finally and it sounds just stunning. I wasn't a big fan of this being released as I didn't think there was that more music but this actually is a great expanded album. a little odd sound on track 10 at 39 seconds or so but its still great none the less and i can look past that. a wonderful treasure to have and even better that my daughter has left so I have some time to actually listen to this alone. well done varese this was not a title I was really thinking needed expanded but you proved me wrong.

Pete 'n' Tillie at last !

Its main theme is a killer ! too bad the Bergmans song didn't make this new edition. A welcome release anyway !

I'm surprised, too, because Universal would certainly control the recording Carol Burnett did, and which I still have on a 45.

Carol Burnett's recording is controlled by WEA and was done for her album later on. The promo recording was done for MCA and is therefore controlled by UME. Williams had nothing to do with any of those and the song is not sung in the film.

It was wonderful to just get NBC Universal to agree to this, let alone attempt to bring in two major record labels for material not recorded for the film which the Maestro would not have wanted to include anyway, and which can be found elsewhere.

Once again people need to realize that NBC Universal and Universal Music Group (which has the MCA catalog) are two completely different companies with no corporate connection. NONE. That ended 13 years ago.

Mike M.

Good info, thanks!

Pete 'n' Tillie is a revelation. It's a lovely score, very much in the same spirit and style as Stanley & Iris. Mercifully free from pop-70s arrangements, it's another example of Williams' amazing ability to create memorable and descriptive themes. Really outstanding stuff. Thanks to Varese, Mike and the whole team for going to the extra effort to include it.

Received my CD today. Wow ! The films made little impact at the boxoffice, but John Williams' scores are simply stunning. Thank you so much Varese. I know Varese never went away, but for me I must say WELCOME BACK.

Apart from PETE´n´TILLIE - is the additional material for STANLEY & IRIS interesting and the sound quality much better than on the original album?

Sound seems about the same to me, but I don't know that there was ever an issue with sound on this one. The new material isn't a revelation – it's variations on the same. If you like the score, you'll probably like the new material. If not, you'll probably be unmoved.

It's never been a favorite score of mine (much as I often like Williams in this lower key mode), but I did enjoy my first listen yesterday. The score grew on me by the time it reached its emotional climax in "Letters."

On first listen, though, I couldn't hear any significant differences between the "film version" tracks and their album counterparts. Am I missing something?

"Pete 'n' Tillie" is a monothematic score, but it's a very nice theme, and the variations certainly hold up over its brief running time.

Pete'n'Tillie is a great addition. Turns out that, aside form the main title, the film cuts out most of the musical highlights, going by my memory anyway of trying to watch it. Makes me think of Seven Years in Tibet in the sense that it is like a half-rejected score made worse by the fact that it was the best material that got rejected. Great service to have this music see the light of day 45 years later. I've long had a fondness for that theme with it's perfectly characterized blend of wistful melancholy with the more conventional aspects of a love theme about connection and romance. Wonderful release all around.

I've had several score tracks (audio rips) of the PETE'N'TILLE score for years (6 cues, including the song and the source cue "Pete's Piano Rag" -- none of which feature on the soundtrack, but not composed by Williams either). I'll be glad to delete these -- except the song and source -- when I get this album. It's a lovely little gem of a score, and I'm thrilled that it's being released at last.

Alas, I'll have to sit around and wait untill it pops up on the secondary market somewhere; or untill it's offered on sale or something. As I said before, I cannot afford and justify $35 for a single CD at this point, especially not when it's only the P&T stuff I'm interested in. Unless it's getting close to sold out; then I have to muster up the money somewhere.

Thank you! I actually prefer THE ACCIDENTAL TOURIST anyway. So, maybe I should save my money for other things and stop my completism rage.

Great scores! Touching introduction by Robert T. in the liner notes, great cover art (too bad no alternative cover was made for Pete 'N' Tillie!) - love both the expanded Stanley & Iris and the Pete 'N' Tillie tracks. Excellent job, Varèse!

I didn't particularly like the covers in the other thread, so I made one myself:

Thanks for the cover. Best one so far. I'll use that too, when I can afford the CD.

Strange that Varese didn't do an 'inside' cover of P&T, which at least FSM used to do whenever they had "doubles" like this.

FSM didn't always do it -- hence I had to wait for the great Brad Willis to do a Girl Named Sooner cover (from the tie-in novel) ...plus for Williams there was The Paper Chase.
