I found this movie in a bargain bin for $5 back in July... I finally popped it in and watched it yesterday.

Aside from a couple of minor holes and errors... fantastic, FANTASTIC movie. It's easily the best film that Jean Claude Van Damme has done, and Powers Boothe really excels here as well. LOTS of gratuitous violence and tension for the action fan in me... and a decent story and decent character development as well! Not something you get in many films *these* days...

My only complaint is that the only version available is the single DVD hacked into fullscreen dimensions. Where's the widescreen DVD / Blu-Ray already?! Come on, Universal...

John Debney's score is ballsy and VERY prominent as well. I am glad that Varese issued a 30-minute album back in the day, which I thankfully own... I shall give this a spin quite soon.

However, I would *love* to have a complete, expanded, remastered edition of the full score as well...

Now to put another Peter Hyams film on the queue list... Stay Tuned!

(As an aside, and a rather crude remark... I could have titled this thread "John Debney's Sudden Death", but then it would have a different meaning altogether, wouldn't it?)

How about you guys?

My favorite Van Damme movie (saw it in the theater on my birthday) and I love the score. Neither is groundbreaking stuff, but both are harmless good fun. Took me forever to find the soundtrack at the time, so it remains a treasured title in my collection. Would happily swap it for an expanded release, though.

As for the film, this Van Damme four-pack released in 2009 includes Sudden Death in Anamorphic widescreen:

smile

Also including Hard Target and a widescreen version of The Quest, it's a pretty good deal, as you end up with three of Van Damme's best. (Never seen Lionheart.)

Fairly sure the Brigish DVD is in full widescreen.

And the Varese CD is great.

It's a lot better than most other JCVD movies, though it's too bad it's so hard to find the John Scott CD (some tracks were released on one of edel's compilations). I'd still like to know why Debney's Sudden Death score had to be patterned so much after The Fugitive (it's still an enjoyable 30:30, don't get me wrong).

The Sudden Death score kicks ass... Yeah, it's pretty clear the film was temp tracked with The Fugitive. However, Debney's score for Sudden Death rocks. He takes JNH's action music from The Fugitive to the next level and makes it even more hard hitting. There's a ton of action music in the film that's missing on the cd. I really wish Varese would revisit this score with a Deluxe Edition, but sadly I doubt that will ever happen.

As for the film, sure Sudden Death is a rip off of Die Hard, however it's the best of all the knock offs.

Also, in my opinion, Van Damme has more decent films than Steven Seagal: Kickboxer, Bloodsport, Lionheart, Hard Target, Universal Soldier, Sudden Death, Time Cop, JCVD, and Universal Soldier: Regeneration.

The only solid Steven Seagal film I can think of: Under Siege, which I would count as the second best knock off of Die Hard.

A nice companion score to SUDDEN DEATH is Shirley Walker's TURBULENCE, which uses a lot of similiar synth drum machine loops with a big orchestra.

The "Brigish" DVD, eh? I'll have to check that one out!

If the last couple of years in film scores have showed us one thing, it's than anything is possible. big grin

Throughout the 1990s, I enjoyed Seagal's output much more than Van Damme's and like just about all of his movies before he went direct-to-video. But it's funny, Seagal went DTV and his movies got worse, while Van Damme went DTV and his movies actually got better.

Oddly, the laserdisc IS in widescreen, which is why I've never replaced it with the DVD.

The DVD has been in Widescreen twice! Once paired with Hard Target as a Double Feature and this one:

I bought 2 copies of this score and didn't like either one of them.

Van Damme gets his ass kicked by a giant Penguin in Sudden Death. Seriously, how can one not like this movie? As for the two widescreen releases on dvd... If I recall correctly, it's first release was full screen, then came the pairing with Hard Target, which the back claimed was 'full screen' for Sudden Death as well. It wasn't until the 4 pack in which the film finally got it's beautiful widescreen release. I can't wait to see it on Blu Ray.

Nope, I believe it's the other way around...

She gets her left hand burned in the deep fryer and she is choked to death on the dishwashing conveyor. big grin

I know, I know. Still, that Penguin did beat his arse quite a bit in the process.

You know something, I just now realized that's probably where Family Guy got the idea with those giant Chicken fights.

This was one of the first movies I ever saw being sold on DVD. There was a little laserdisc shop down the street from my house, and it late-1997 when DVDs started trickling out, they had so few that they were just held on a little metal spindle thingy on the front counter. Sudden Death and a couple others were actually in jewel cases, and I remembering thinking, "Cool. I can just put these DVDs in a regular CD tower." LOL!

I would definitely purchase an expanded of this! Debney has a bunch of scores that released with only 30-40 min back in the 90s that would benefit greatly from expansion. Add it to the list!

A deluxe edition would be very appreciated. In the meantime, the end credits of the movie have one unreleased Debney track...
