Commissioned by Heifetz, the concerto was completed in 1953, and premiered on January 15th, 1956. A monumental achievement. Billy Wilder was so enraptured by Rozsa's work that he played it often while working in his office, and asked the composer to adapt it as the inspiration for his score for Wilder's cherished masterpiece, "The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes." Back in the early 70s I got this after seeing Private Life of Sherlock Holmes.
