After scoring the 1958 feature film THUNDER ROAD, legendary guitarist Jack Marshall would begin composing television series music for Revue (aka Universal Television). This deluxe collection demonstrates the composer’s remarkable versatility, with Disc One dedicated to his delightful and iconic mock-macabre from both seasons of THE MUNSTERS, while Disc Two showcases highlights of his work from THE DEPUTY, WAGON TRAIN and THE VIRGINIAN. La-La Land Records and Paramount Pictures present a remastered CD re-issue of the renowned composer Ryuichi Sakamoto’s (MERRY CHRISTMAS, MR. LAWRENCE, THE LAST EMPEROR) original score to the 1992 period feature film drama EMILY BRONTË’S WUTHERING HEIGHTS, based upon the classic novel, and starring Ralph Fiennes and Juliette Binoche, and directed by Peter Kosminsky.

Now officially available for the first time outside of its original 1992 Japanese soundtrack release, the late and acclaimed Maestro’s WUTHERING HEIGHTS score returns, remastered and ripe for rediscovery. Highly dramatic and by turns deeply romantic, tragically haunting, and beautifully innocent, Sakamoto’s wonderous work is an orchestral marvel to savor.

Produced by Dan Goldwasser and mastered by Doug Schwartz, this presentation includes five previously unreleased tracks, as well as exclusive, in-depth liner notes by writer John Takis. The release is limited to 1000 units and features art direction by Goldwasser.

Samples sound great!! The product page lists 1000 units at the top, which I'm guessing is a typo.

I picked up the Munsters album. What a strange combination of comedy horror and western drama music. I'm scratching my head at the intended demographic for this... is it for Munsters fans or is it for Western fans? The tracks are nice but the Munsters score is cut so far down it plays more like a sampler disc than a soundtrack. Some episode tracks end before the episode has even entered the main title credits. The Western tracks appear to be complete. Hopefully they release an expanded Munsters set in the future. Lots of good tunes missing from this one but what is there sounds nice.

Perhaps they only released what they could salvage.

The Western tracks appear to be complete.

The Deputy is made up of selections just like The Munsters. That’s understandable since Marshall scored most if not all of both shows. The one score each for Wagon Train and Virginian look complete, but one of Marshall’s two original scores for the latter has been omitted entirely, because presumably its inclusion would have meant dispensing with The Deputy altogether.

I don't think that's the case. The liner notes say that all of the tapes were digitized and had immaculate documentation. Through the grapevine, it sounds like they had over 11 hours of Munsters material alone. I've been thinking on this and i think this may be what happened: Frank Marshall, son of Jack Marshall is involved in these releases, and appears to be an important connection between LLL and Universal in obtaining more soundtrack scores specifically from the Revue productions. Thunder Road, another Jack Marshall score, was released about 3 years ago with 1200 copies, and it's still for sale marked down to $5. I'm guessing based on those numbers, LLL probably didn't see the Marshall Western material selling on its own and used the Munsters as a vehicle to get it out in order to get more interest in the Revue music. Maybe i'm wrong, but there isn't exactly a hungry Jack Marshall fan base that's been asking for this kind of showcase release.

In the end I think what they did was a great way to gets these different scores out (for Jack Marshall --I wouldn't necessarily want something like this for the vast majority of composers).

If anything, if this sells well enough, it might encourage a Volume 2 of scoring from "The Munsters", which might also provide some more western scores from Jack. A win/win if you ask me.

It's concerning for The Munsters if a proper release hinges on this set selling well, and that's really my disappointment here. Essentially we've got a $30 two disc set where both bases (Munsters crowd/Western crowd) are most likely only interested in one of the two discs.

I don't really understand the complaints too much... I mean, LLL is providing good value for $$$. This could have easily been a single CD of music, like what LLL did for My Favorite Martian, or plenty of other shows.

Single disc releases from both them and Intrada are typically $22 now. For literally just $8 more you get a whole packed second disc! And diversifying what's on that second disc seems to me to be likely to increase sales rather than hurt them, under those circumstances.

I know multiple people who are *primarily* interested in the westerns disc here, and The Munsters disc is the 'bonus'! (I think I might include myself in that number.) Have folks forgotten that westerns SELL? Just a few years ago LLL's $60 4CD Paramount Westerns set sold out faster than any other title had from them in a while. And those were mostly Golden Age scores with some Silver Age mixed in! Meanwhile LLL's 2020 single CD release of Marshall's feature film score Munster, Go Home... must not have sold ALL that well, or it wouldn't be promotionally discounted to $10 right now. I think LLL's thinking was that this way, they provided something for BOTH Munsters fans and western fans, and hopefully they each enjoy the additional disc that only cost them $8, basically. I don't think many Munsters fans are going to REFUSE to get this because of paying an extra $8 for a disc they may not care about, and probably folks interested in the disc of westerns will react similarly.

If someone was on trial for murder and the defense played the three tracks of "Wagon Train" to the jury as an example of music the defendant appreciated or enjoyed listening to at home, or even actually purchased with his own hard-earned money, he would quickly have the charge reduced to manslaughter on grounds of diminished wits.
Fortunately, the creativity and fun of The Munsters tracks (along with the nice stuff from The Virginian) make the collection very worthwhile, despite the absolutely awful Wagon Train custard-pie nonsense.

I bought this primarily for The Munsters as I am not familiar with the westerns on Disc 2. But I am super impressed with sound on Disc 1 (haven't dove into Disc 2 quite yet).

How did Munster, Go Home sell? Maybe the sales were mediocre and LLL is testing the waters for further Munsters releases? I would definitely welcome more! Hope this release is successful!!

I think The Virginian would have benefited from having the series Main Title included. It would have made sense of the brief couple of snippets of the theme that appear later. As it is, those snippets are more like distracting interjections, rather than referencing the full theme prior to its variations.

Speaking only for myself, I am interested in this because I don't have familiarity with Jack Marshall's dramatic work and LOVE The Munsters theme, so this will be a great ear opening sampler.

But I get it. If I were a huge fan of one series' music over the other, I would probably be disappointed. Say if I were an Alexander Courage fan, I'd be less than satisfied with one CD of Star Trek and CD 2 would have Judd for the Defense, Lost in Space comedy music and Eight is Enough.

As someone who just loves 60's TV music, this is a great release.

Oh man. THIS Star Trek fan would be ALL OVER Judd for the Defense… if the underscore is anywhere near as good as the main theme, which is easily one of Alexander Courage’s best:

I actually didn't know western scores are great sellers, but that restores some faith for me. I think my expectations were pretty high on this because I've known LLL has been working on this since around 2019. Excitedly anticipating this for almost four years, and then seeing the sudden announcement less than two weeks ago out of the blue, it's been a little bit of a rollercoaster. I think anyone who really has a connection with a certain series or film wants to see it receive a release that shows off *everything* you love about it. For me, this disc plays nicely and the average listener will enjoy it. Personally, I think season one and season two have such different sounds they should have had their own separate discs, and switching from one to the other halfway through the disc is a little fast. Regardless, I bought another copy and I hope this sells well, so I'm going to do as much as I can to promote it.

I think the audience for this would gather it's an episode score from a series...
