I have seen this film several times and while great I have some complaints.
I read that some fans of JW were afraid that the coming documentary would be to general and not deep enough.
I think that Ennio- the Maestro would be a better film if it was a little more for the common audience and not so much for us nuts. I want more people to explore and listen to Morricone and I am afraid that many viewers lose interest in the beginning. It is chronologic and after half the film we haven’t come further than 1970. I understand that Tornatore wants to explain and show us the development of Ennio’s career, but I feel that he should have showed us more films. The best part is the music and sometimes it is hidden behind interviews.
I think that the part Novecento, Il deserto dei Tartari and Days of Heaven works well. Great music and a good flow in music, pictures and interviews.
I understand that it isn’t easy to choose what to include but there are so many great pieces missing. No Chi Mai? It was even a hit at the charts. And there are several other popular scores missing including Red Tent, Duck you Sucker, Orca, Exorcist-The Heretic, Il Prato, The Thing(music is so important in that film), Casualties of War, State of Grace(like The Thing almost every reviewer mentions the music), Bugsy, Malena, Fateless, Baaria, The Best Offer and more.
His music for Television(Marco Polo, La Piovra, I Promessi Sposi) isn’t mentioned at all. I understand that they couldn’t include everything, but I think that the film would have been more popular and appreciated if there were more films and more music included.
On Earth as it is in Heaven is a great piece of music, but with so many great pieces to choose from Tornatore could have chosen some other for the final( I Guardiani del Cielo, Marco Polo, I Promessi Sposi or The Secret of Sahara would have been perfect), instead of playing it a second time.
The Silver of The Mine is wonderful as end titles.
