I found that the branches of the public library in my city are a good source of soundtracks, for sampling them before buying.

For example, I found the two-disc Varese Sarabande edition of Cleopatra. After kicking the tires on this one I decided to pass on it (I didn't like it, even after playing disc one twice; I returned it to the library without even first ripping it to my laptop).

So maybe take a look at your local library. They might have something interesting.

Unfortunately, it’s not quite as simple as that. About a year or two ago, I checked out my local library’s copy of Doyle’s Sense and Sensibility and couldn’t get past the first track because the disc was too badly damaged.

As late as the eighties decent town and city libraries in the UK were a great source for this activity. Both Sheffield and Rotherham had good soundtrack sections. Not visited them since, but in the days of vinyl, they had two circles printed on the plastic sleeve showing where any scratches were, incase you were concerned about damage to your stylus.

Memory highlights in Rotherham include my first experience of Morricone's Fistful of Dynamite, and a sale of ancient stock where I picked up a good Kid's TV theme compilation on BBC Records.

Until recently I was a Librarian in the UK. Our libraries stopped lending and buying CDs about six years ago. They were just not economical. Many public libraries have done the same. With more and more people downloading music, CDs are being taken off the shelves.

Not only do I do this with music but also movies. I do a lot of blind checkouts with movies I never watched. Then I decide if it’s worth the purchase. Saves you tons of money and space. There are more times when I am in certain moods and a library check out is better than buying it.

The libraries in my area charge for movie rentals, so it's not something I do, especially since most of them are scratched to the point of being unreadable.

I used to check out lots of CDs back in the day.

If the disc loads you can right click on the disk image and drag and drop the music files onto your hard drive.

Wow, really? Libraries are supported by tax dollars, they shouldn't be charging for rentals. It was also my understanding movies and CD's are donated not purchased.

I haven't been to my local library since 2001.

Yes I am surprised a public library charges for rentals. My small town library has a system where it will share other local libraries items if they don’t have what I want. No complaints. Yes sometimes discs are scratched and sometimes I have to wait for a new release but since video rental stores are now closed, my library filled the need and it’s free.

Libraries are gearing up digital collections; movies and film music are available through Hoopla and Kanopy.

One of the libraries in my county is huge -- I've never been in a library this large. I have yet to see a soundtrack; doesn't mean there aren't any, but the DVD collection is much much larger.

Yeah, that rental charge is very strange. The only charges my local library gives is when an item (book, movie, or CD) is overdue with said charge increasing the longer it's overdue (unless you renew the item).

Could someone tell me what a public library looks like.

I've heard they're getting scarce in your neck of the woods. frown

When's a library not a library. When it's a Community Hub!!

A lot of UK libraries have had to take on other Council Services, to the detriment of the library service. In the UK Councils can close libraries, but if they maintain a library service there is a law in place that means the service has to be run efficiently.

Practically discovered film scores through my public library. Some of the first CDs I took out were David Newman's The Phantom and some of the Charles Gerhardt albums.
