It is amazing to me that a score this good by a composer of Bernstein's stature has received so little attention. To this day, the only official release of this score was a 1969 LP on Paramount Records, with vocals by Mary Hopkin and Danny Doyle.

The movie is a British period piece about a roguish highwayman and Bernstein delivers a very flavorful score.

I would love to see a CD release. Until then, I'll hang on to my album.

Yes, what a shame it has never had a proper release on CD. Its one of my favourite LPs, I love it. I got my copy signed by Elmer in Dublin in 1970. Here's still hoping that it might yet come out!

I found the LP in a used record store years ago. Agreed, an impressive and enjoyable Bernstein effort.

The film is very entertaining as well -- though I'm generally a fan of those 1960s "period romps" that were inspired by Tom Jones.

Where's Jack was sort of remade (or ripped off, depending on your point of view) in the 1999 movie Plunkett & Macleane

I don't fully understand : are you asking for a LP program transfer to CD, or for an expanded and remastered release of the score ? Because "Where's Jack" was released on CD, coupled with Roy Budd's "Kidnapped" (I have that CD, and I'm listening to it now) :

Laurent-Watteau, that "Where's Jack?"/"Kidnapped" twofer was of dubious origin, or "unmentionable" as they say around here.

A release of the whole thing would be great, but probably problematic because the original score-to-film was recorded in London (and included whistling effects from Roger Whittaker) while the album (on Paramount Records) was recorded in Rome.

Yeah, I've got that CD with the Budd score, but I don't think it's legit. My initial post stated "official" release. So, to answer your question, yes to either an album transfer or an expanded issue, thank you very much.

Yup, I'd buy it. It was released on Paramount Records, which I think is owned by UMG now. I'm surprised that no one have licensed it out, after all it is Elmer Bernstein (& a lovely vocal by Mary Hopkin), maybe there's some legal problem or tapes missing.

A lovely song indeed!

(Edit: The Mary Hopkin vocal, that is! smile )
