I get heavy Roxanne vibes from this. (Sadly no sign yet of Rosanna Arquette singing the Aeroplane Jelly song like in the movie...) It's an odd movie... (To go TV Tropes role association-y - Roberta Glass married to Trainman and daydreaming of Agent Smith.)
”Copy. Of course I copy. Please, when do I not copy? All I do is copy.” Mission: Impossible III (Music From The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) - Michael Giacchino
The third installment of the ongoing Mission Impossible franchise was released in theaters 15 years ago today. Although this installment was an improvement over the previous film by John Woo, imo. JJ Abrams seems to struggle with transitioning from TV to film on his feature directorial debut. De Palma and Woo were able to inject their own style into an MI movie. While Bird and Macquarrie (who’s in the middle of wrapping up his third entry and planning to direct another installment afterwards) were able to inject a style into their own entries. It’s obvious watching MI3 that Abrams broke out on television. Certain moments felt like it belonged in an episode of Alias. Giacchino’s score seems often overlooked compared to other MI scores in the franchise. It’s still a very solid effort with some fun action cues (with “Bridge Battle” being a major highlight) even though I think Giacchino exceeded this score with the next installment.
All the reservations I had about listening to this material seem to melt away when I throw them all into one big playlist and hit shuffle. There is so much more melodic variety here, especially- but not exclusively- with the LIS scores than I realized.
