When Brubeck played Audrey Hepburn's funeral, his then-alto sax player played Paul Desmond's "Audrey" solo note for note. He had learned it by heart as a kid off of the "Brubeck Time" album.
I just saw this! Great story. Desmond had a great sense of humor, as well, and I read somewhere that at one time he was considering writing a memoir with the title--because he was often asked--"How Many People Are In Your Quartet?"
Also, considering some of the great themes written for her in films, what an honor that this was what she played every night. Too bad Desmond never knew it.
