Enjoyable music for what it is. Not euro-peplum, and not a western (which Shefter had generally done). I'm always dubious about whether Shefter was even a composer.

Who is Last Child and why is he saying those terrible things about Bert?
I was thinkin' you gonna say Roy Webb ghostwrote music for Shefter.
Doesn't David "MMM" Schecter represent Bert Shefter's estate?
I'm reminded of a member named "Heath" who (in FSM threads of yesteryear) posited that Van Cleave wasn't a composer and that Fred Steiner wrote all of his music.

I don't know about all of Van Cleave's music, but Steiner's orchestration for "Robinson Crusoe On Mars" might be more Steiner than Van Cleave. Shefter's collaboration with Sawtell was not always musical despite sharing credit. It's not uncommon. Les Baxter apparently hired ghost composers. I know, it's deplorable and a betrayal...not unlike Jezebel herself. Sorry to pop your pimple or burst your blister, whatever the phrase is.

Yeah, I agree.
Film music is much more a collaborative art than most of us soundtrack collectors care to acknowledge. It's easier to file an album by a single composer name than cross-file titles also by co-composers' names.

I wonder if that's true about Van Cleave being a bit of a charlatan? I've always loved his arrangements for "White Christmas" (and the VistaVision fanfare) so I'm hoping he really is as talented as I've always presumed!

His authorship has been discussed somewhere on FSM before and I don't recall if it was conclusive. I thought he had a progressive drinking problem, and friends helped in later years. But you can hear similar melodies in different scifi soundtracks, so it might have been a collaboration rather than complete ghost written scores or work. This might have been after "White Christmas."
