I've seen a few playthroughs and it looks really good.

I'm still half tempted by Arkham Horror the Card Game and the Pandemic Cthulu.

Hey Scorefan, I'm getting Pandemic: Reign of Cthulhu (as it's 30% off on Amazon). But i was wondering which Cthulhu games you rate the best. I know you mentioned one on the previous page.

Arkham Horror
Arkham Horror the Card Game
Eldritch Horror
Mansions of Madness

I know lots have expansions but i wondered how easy they were to pick up and learn, especially if you might not be returning to them on a too regular basis. And if they are replayable.

Hi Xebec, I have not played Arkham Horror the Card Game before, so I can't comment on that game. I believe they have released, or will soon be releasing a revised version of the game, so you may want to make sure what version you are buying should you decide to get that. I have heard great things about the game, and I believe it has a high rating on board game geek.

Arkham Horror is a lot of fun, and fairly easy to learn. Most of my experience with this game is the earlier edition, but the new version is also fun. The current version is pretty fast paced and I recall it being pretty repayable. I have only played the core game. There are a few expansions out there, and they look like a lot of fun.

Of the games you listed, I have the most experience playing Eldritch Horror. That game is a ton of fun and is pretty repayable. If you get the core set, you should also get the small box Forsaken Lore expansion, which greatly expands the core game. I have most of the other expansions, and the overall quality is great. Globetrotting the world and solving mysteries to prevent an Elder One from awakening is a lot of fun. Playing the game is a time commitment, particularly if you have several players playing. It is a lot of fun, and it scales well. The game does have a learning curve, and there are some fiddly bits, but I think it is worth spending the time to learn the game, and is an overall fantastic experience.

Mansions of Madness is designed to be played with an app. If using an app concerns you this might not be the game for you. Personally, I love the app, and I think it adds depth to the game that you can't really get without the app. There are limited scenarios, but they are well constructed and it is very thematic. The stories are giant mysteries, and you have to figure out what the objectives are to win the game. The downside is that once you have beaten a scenario, the game is probably the least repayable of the four games you listed. There are plenty of variants like the investigators you use and the monsters you face, but once a scenario is beaten I doubt you would have much interest in revisiting the scenario. The experience you get while playing is fantastic, and the app keeps track of the expansions you have and brings in components from the various expansions. So I think it is a fantastic game, but it might also make it to the table the least. The game can also be brutally hard, which makes victory all the more sweet.

Another Cthulhu game that I don't believe I have mentioned before is Elder Sign. It is easy to learn and teach. Basically, it is highly thematic Yahtzee. There is a lot more to it than that, but it is a dice rolling game and a lot of fun and is very repayable. It is also fairly short to play, and a good gateway game for people who don't play a lot of boardgames.

Hope this helps!

This is great, thanks Michael! That really helps.

I'm hoping the Pandemic Cthulhu gets whoever i play it with into the mindset of Cthulu games, then i can get them playing one of the others. I'm not really for apps, my tech is usually too far behind, but it might be mest for an immersive experience with a small group who don't play games too often. Also, if it takes any of the working out away and streamlines the game, then i'm all for it.

We played Dinosaur World last night, which is a game that was recently released. Basically you own your own Jurassic Park, which you grow and populate with dinosaurs. You want to be careful with the dinosaurs you grow. Large carnivores like a T-Rex can get you the most points, but also pose the most risk. If you don't beef up your security enough, the carnivores start eating guests, which is generally bad for business. You can also add other attractions which can give you bonuses. Pretty fun game that is a follow-up to Dinosaur Island, which had a similar theme. This new game also apparently has a solo mode.

I'm so tempted by this but can't tell whether it's for me, or if I'd be able to get anyone to play it. Love the look and theme. Was it easy to learn? I'll watch a few playthroughs.

I did play a solo, two-handed game of Pandemic Reign of Cthulu and really enjoyed it. It's quite easy to get into the Lovecraftian mood.

Hi Xebec, I found the game pretty easy to learn. The game takes place over 5 turns, and each turn has several steps. Once you get the steps down it plays pretty well. Developing a winning strategy on the other hand takes some time. Hopefully you can find some players willing to give it a try. If not, I confirmed with my friend that there is a solo mode included with the game.

I still need to give Pandemic Reign of Cthulhu a try. I have done a pretty deep dive into Cthulhu games though, so it may be a while before I look into getting another Lovecraft inspired game. There is a local gaming convention coming up in February 2022. If the pandemic is more under control I hope to attend. With any luck someone will be running this game.

Hey Michael, thanks. I'll give it a good bit of research. Sounds fun.

The games you are used to playing mean you'll probably pick up how to play Pandemic Cthulhu in about 2 minutes.

I hope you get to that expo and enjoy a few games.

Just received this today:

The cover shown in the picture is no longer accurate, although the components are. Here is the official cover:

Thanks to La-La Land I have plenty of appropriate music to listen to while playing this game.

Boy was I wrong on this one. I must admit it - totally wrong. I did not like the look of the game and I had no interest because I wasn't expecting a Dune game to look how Dune: Imperium looks.
But since I'm a huge fan of all things Dune, I bought it after a while and it was sitting on my shelf unplayed for a couple of month. I started to play a few weeks ago and here's the truth: it's a great, great game. In fact, I like it so much now, that I don't understand how I could not like its look at first.
The design is nice, simple and functional. The Automa for playing solo is one of the best I've seen so far. Highly recommended.

^^All set up for a solo game

^^ Custom starter marker I got on Etsy and painted to match the colors of the Box

Classic. That's how most gaming night gatherings go, isn't it? The most important piece of gaming equipment might be a baseball bat under the table... for those competitive contests. smile

Just Trivial Pursuit.

There should be a film music related edition.
