I wanted to title this Actors You Don’t Connect With (or To). But a few resident grammarians might nail me for ending with a preposition or an infinitive. I love a ton of male and female actors, but a few exist that I just can’t relate to or enjoy in any way. I don’t understand how they achieved fame. (They also acquired a fortune.) Two male comic actors who have NEVER resonated with me are Will Ferrell and Adam Sandler. I don’t find either of them funny, especially Ferrell. I now avoid films with either of them. (I have read that Sandler is good in Uncut Jems. Haven’t seen it.) Another one is Keanu Reeves. With the exception of his performance in The Lake House, I find his performances very bland. He is a nice-looking guy, but I want to see some acting chops. My folks always had old black and white movies playing on our TV, and if Ethel Merman was on, I had to leave the room. If she was singing, I had to leave the house. Her voice just grated on me. I know a lot of fans loved Marilyn Monroe and kept saying that under her beauty was a gifted actress. Her butt and chest thrusts and whispery voice were about all I ever witnessed. She did have one good scene in Bus Stop, but otherwise I could never discover her acting talents. I think they were hidden too deeply for me. So, who are your movie (or TV) actors that never connected with you? (Yikes, this is a bit negative. Being a poor actor doesn’t mean a person is a bad person. I promise to post, “Who do you think are our greatest actors?” later.) (I’m sure we might disagree with some of the picks, but it would be nice to politely disagree. For instance, some of you dislike Christian Bale which is fine. I don’t like his prima donna antics, but I think he is a decent actor. Different strokes or opinions are okay.)

Joan, Brad Pitt has proven your negative by forming an epoxy-like bond with my predilection in dramatic art. No other actor out there (except possibly Oscar Isaac) has taste that so closely conforms to mine. Best of all, Pitt has the clout to get odd, esoteric pieces done in Hollywood, thus transmuting America's famously fatuous tastes for the better.

Mark, I wish I hadn't read a few biographies. Private lives of some actors have affected my connection with some actors. I would list both Steve McQueen and Burt Lancaster as two of my favorite actors, but I am sorry I read their biographies. Don't think they beat anyone, but they were portrayed as rampant serial cheaters. Like you, I should avoid information on private lives. Brando was my favourite actor before I read a couple of bios. Am avoiding finding out anything more about Charlton Heston and Kirk Douglas, both of whom have become favourites of mine over the years, lest my view of them is soured. I know of Heston's NRA affiliations, and I know that gets some peoples backs up, but not living in the US, and not really understanding that issue, it doesn't play on my mind. The funny thing is that whilst I avoid actors bios now I do read a lot of directors bios and no matter how horrible a person they were it never affects my opinion of their movies. My favourite director is Hitchcock!!

Christian Bale. We used to get along smashingly until the "incident". Since then we've been more or less done, professionally.
