I've developed an alarming dislike of the actor Christian Bale.
Things started off so well, too.
I thought he was great in EMPIRE OF THE SUN, carrying the film on his 11 year old shoulders.
I didn't mind him in BATMAN BEGINS either, despite his ridiculous 'I'm batman' voice (I'm sure he was told to do that by Nolan and co).
But lately, just the sight of his 'gurning gob' makes me want to punch his face in (I know he wouldn't want to fight ME though, cos I hear he prefers to beat up women).
I know he's picked up a bit of a rep off-set, with various stories emanating from the previously mentioned 'fighting women' spat and his notorious explosion on some sound guy, who looked at him or something, while he was thesping out.
I don't know how much these tales have to do with my current distaste for him, but even seeing him onscreen has become annoying to me.
The trailer for the recent car racing one (I'd never watch a film about motor racing in a million years, so it never, ever had my money anyway) has me flinching in anger every time he utters a line and acts 'dead hard'.
Anyone else hate* him (or ANY other actor, for that matter) for no discernible reason?

*jackfu just reminded me hate might be an extreme term (and he might be a really lovely guy to his friends), but you get my gist, we only have their 'sold to us' persona to go on.

Before this goes off the rails, I'll say that I get you point about celebs whom are just jerks. I don't know that I hate any of them (again, I get your context there), and there are many I genuinely dislike; sometimes my blood boils when I hear how they treat those they deem as inferiors.
Likewise, I don't want to hear their opinions/political views (left or right) on anything when they have a readily-available soapbox from which to preach them - they have as much right to express them, but please, just act in your films. The way so many of them are treated as demi-gods seems to go to their heads.
I've often wondered what would happen, for instance if one found oneself in the situation like with Baldwin attacking some random guy over a parking space, or whatever it was. Would you let the celeb assault you, knowing you'd get some significant $ in a lawsuit settlement, or, if you had the physical skills, and they were the aggressor, would you wipe up the pavement with them? The temptation to just beat the crap outta them would be great, indeed!

I have a mild irritation towards Bale's off-screen behaviour, but no hate like you seem to have, Kev. I tend to enjoy almost everything he's in.

There are plenty of other actors and actresses whose mere presence and demeanour irritate the hell out of me. Like most sane people, I can't stand Adam Sandler, for example. And I don't know what happened to Ben Stiller; he's got a genius comedian for a dad (and his late mom ain't bad either), but somehow manages to be constantly non-funny in the comedies he makes. Woody Allen often goes on my nerves. In terms of actresses, I've always struggled with Anne Hathaway and Emma Stone. Can't quite put my finger on it; something about their whole persona, I think.

Plenty of others too, but I'll have to get back to you.

Yup, Christian Bale, Ryan Reynolds, Mark Wahlberg, Daniel Craig & I'm sure lots more. I don't hate them, but I don't want to spend any time in their company.

Bale doesn't bother me, for all his uphimselfness. However, as soon as Tom Cruise steps out of character I could nuke whatever state he's reported to be in.

Plenty of so-called celebrities set me off, but mainly the ones who have no discernable talent and are just where they are by sheer luck or by sleeping with the right person.

Mark Wahlberg is another good one, yes. I tend to like a lot of the films he's in, but not he himself. Has about as much charisma as a box of tuna fish.

I saw Brendan Fraser in a TV comedy quiz show the other night (I never minded him), & my god, his neck is now bigger that his waist used to be. That guy likes his food.

Reading Bale's filmography tells me I've seen hardly any of his films though I thought he was good in The Prestige, a film I enjoyed. Other than Empire of the Sun I don't think I've seen any others.

I can never stand Tom Cruise acting, too smug and overdoes it most of the time. I like Matt Damon though.

Funny you should bring this up! I just literately heard the video of him going off on the stagehand the other day on YT. I was shocked and disgusted by his behavior. I would have a hard time watching his films again knowing how he treats other people. What a tool.

I finally agree with Thor about something. Well, apart from his films being good. I've only seen one and that was The Happening.

I found him tolerable through Batman Begins, but there was something particularly muggy about him with Dark Knight.
I agree that he was remarkable in Empire of the Sun, very difficult film and challenging role, he handled that performance with amazing skill, especially for someone so young. But it seems like that natural quality increasingly evaded him as he grew more "mature".

I don't know anyone who doesn't like Matt Damon, Thomas.
His stint on the Graham Norton show with Bill Murray and Hugh Bonneville was a classic.

Here's the thing with Bale (though he's by no means the only one who's like this).
Part of his "method" (if you want to call it that) is to truly try to inhabit whatever role he's doing.
The downside of it is that he starts to believe he really does have the skills and abilities in reality that he does in the role.
The end result is that he walks around thinking that he can talk to people the way he did that day to that assistant, and that he'd be able to fend off whatever retaliation he might have earned.
No joke--in my neighborhood he would not have been able to walk after an outburst like that.
He got off REALLY lucky that day. I wonder if he realizes that.

By comparison, Christian Bale smells like a fookin' rose.
