I've avoided GoT for years, mostly due to being bored to death of these phonebook sized, multi volume fantasy epics. I got halfway through The Wheel Of Time series some years ago, realized that after 5 books and what, 3 or 4000 pages, nothing was happening and this was BS . When the series started, all the rave was about the sex and violence, which is HBO's way of fanning the flames and creating buzz. So again, I thought, no, this was just nothing I had any interest in at all. But then a lady friend convinced me to give it a try, so since seasons 1 & 2 just had huge price cuts, I picked them up and we're giving it a try. Now, we're just halfway through season 1, but damn if the thing isn't pretty darn gripping. The sex and gore are laughably over the top, though. Hell, we've only done 5 episodes, but any and every opportunity to nekkid people is fully exploited. Tonight we had more doggy style sex, a discreet male on male off screen blowjob with juicy sound effects, and a horse gets it's head chopped off . The storyline is pulling me in, but really, they should tone it down a bit. It's not serving the story, at least so far. But now we kinda see how folks are addicted to the show.

The whole novel cycle is a canny satire on sclerotic human institutions. Highly relevant stuff, if you're into that, with added imaginative content! But TV is TV, and David Benioff says the initial pilot was boring. I'm sure a lot of the spice in this show is to keep it from relapsing.

One of the things I like about this show is that it started out a bit slow & just got better & better, so much going on, too much really. A couple of series ago, Arya & The Hound got involved with an interesting bunch of outlaws (Paul Kaye was an archer), all very promising, but after a couple of episodes they were gone. And the two Stark boys, whatever happened to the younger one? I could really do without the army of the dead (but what a great battle). And I don't know why Daenerys wants to go to the city with the Iron Throne, with winter coming she's better off where she is (mind you, in the last episode I saw, Tyrion told her as much). But what a great series, I'm interested in what happens to the two Stark girls now. Is it true that season six catches up with the books? I wonder how many seasons they'll make?

Warning! I don't do spoiler alerts! You have been warned! So, did you catch the thing with Jon Snow? He must've warged out of himself and into Ghost when he was getting stabbed last season; then he un-warged out of Ghost and back into himself after the Red Woman worked her mojo upon him! And what about that little coup d'état at Winterfell, with Ramsay Bolton whacking his dad Roose, just like Roose had done to Rob Stark at The Red Wedding? Delicious but, since the whole Bolton thing has not been invested with the same time and attention as other story lines, it felt kind of perfunctory. Having the kennel dogs eat Walda Frey and Ramsey's new little brother was nice and demonic. I loved the way Iwan Rheon shifts his gaze to the baby being eaten as the shot plays out. And don't get me started on that f----r Jonathan Pryce as The High Septon. That lucky devil steals the show anytime he gets a big scene. Staring down Jaime Lannister in the Sept of Baelor...nice. Good to see that Ser Robert Strong, Cersei's un-dead superwarrior reanimated by Qyburn from the remains of Gregor Clegane, has begun his murder campaign against any who would dare publicly mock or criticize Sweet Cersei. You know, Cersei's manner of death, and even her eventual executioner have been revealed in the novel. She's already done more than enough to deserve that ignominious death. I hope to see her do even more so that moment will be even more satisfying. I know, I know! I'm taking too perverse a pleasure in "spoiling" your precious secrets, and especially in enjoying the twisted murders and violence. If that's your perspective...try another thread, or watch another show. I started this thread and will do all the spoiling I want. Dissenters will Die Screaming.

Warning! Non-spoiler warning Warning! I'll be back tomorrow afternoon with my "scorching" take on tonight's episode, called "Oathbreaker". Sounds like a Jaime Lannister-heavy episode to me. Just to let you know, I won't be holding back on spoilers or venom or celebration or any of that. All you delicate flowers out there beware. Consider yourself warned.

It looks as if Ramsay Bolton has now obtained a great strategic advantage, with the Umbers handing over Rickon Stark! Fortunately, Osha was part of that package, and should be able to subvert the situation to the Starks' advantage in the future. Another pleasurable scene with that wily f----r Jonathan Pryce as the High Septon, working his way with young King Tommen. I do hope Pryce gets to stick around... ...as well as Diana Rigg playing Olenna Tyrell, the Queen of Thorns, whom I loved ditching the Small Council meeting with Kevan Lannister when confronted with Cersei and her Manster. And nice to see Samwell Tarly! Go Sam and Gilly! Can't wait to meet the Tarly family! That could be as juicy a set of family dynamics (and I don't mean that in a pleasant way) as any on this show. And finally, great execution of the Night's Watch assassins. Good and gruesome with the death masks, and nicely drawn out too, just like last season's execution-at-the-stake of helpless little Shireen Baratheon. And then his watch has ended.

On tap for tomorrow night is an episode titled "Book of the Stranger". These episode titles generally don't mean very much, but a mention of The Stranger (a member of The Seven, no less.) leads me to believe that someone significant will die. A fan can, and will, hope for an appropriate death for someone who deserves it. If Benioff and Weiss and Martin kill off Gilly, or Samwell Tarly, or Tyrion for chrissakes', then I'll take to whining like one of you red velvet flowers who complains about the show being "torture porn" or moving too slowly. If that's your stance, resume watching your Netflix streams of "Blossom" re-runs, and leave us real Ice and Fire fans be.
