It came down the lightning strike, which of course, strikes the same spot more than once.

Ordered! (From the samples) Sound quaity is greatly improved and clear! Thanks Intrada and Team. Im sure, another astrounding job by Mike Matessino. I suppose sound is transfered in high resolution. The Opening/ Prologe and Epilogue (sans dialogue) are already my favourite cues!

I actually quite like that prolog. There's the moment when Freeman says that Man had become sure of his dominion over the Earth and at that point, there's a brief accompanying sound effect that sounds like a laugh (or sinister chuckle) of satisfied self-complacency. It has an echo-plex effect. Does anyone know how that effect was done?

Edit: I've just re-examined that moment and there's a large flock of pigeons at some world tourist spot lifting off the ground and taking flight and the sound effect is inserted at that specific place. It is the sound of wings flapping in unison. But the strange thing is it still sounds like a form of sarcastic, self-satisfied laughter to me. That is quite clever juxtaposition, if indeed, that is what it is. It's really strange that I never noticed the flocking birds before because Morgan Freeman's narration is very condescending towards Man's infinite complacency. Actually, the reason I associated that sound effect with laughter is because I've heard it on CD more than I've seen it on DvD, so no surprise that psychologically it came off to me as a sort of superficial mimic laughter. If it is meant to signify smug laughter, then it kind of lends itself to the alter-egotistic, yet equally smug bellowing of Martian victory over Man on his home planet that comes later. Also, that wing flapping/feigned laughter is the only sound effect that's been wired into the narration sequence which otherwise carries no sound other than Morgan Freeman's vocal and the disquieting musical prolog. Yeah, it might have been put there to fill a blank space because you sort of expect to hear the flapping of wings when a large flock of birds lift off the ground, but still, I'm not so sure - I still say it's cloaked laughter to add counterpoint to what Freeman is saying. What do you think?

I'm very curious to hear what people think about this new edition once they have received it. I was also in the category of not connecting with the original album.

Initially I had only a liking of some cues but over multiple listens the rest of the score began to grow on me. Its amazing even when the typical Williams thematic material which is absent here and making way of the subtle low register mateial to take front stage actually works so well. Its dark, moody and yet aggresive. Listening to it has been a rewarding experience and I just cant wait to hear it all over again in a new pristine sound transfer and mix. I have been anxiously awaiting for this restoration for quite sometime.

no "remastered" nor "expanded" on the front cover?

Which I personally prefer for aesthetic reasons.

Just wanted to know if the Tripod trumpet like blast effect was created by John Williams in pre production? If so it would be nice to have that as an added Easter Egg on this set!

It wasn't musically created actually. I did think about having it but there was no clean element for it, and the mood at the time the project was getting finalized was not one in which it felt like a good idea to scare listeners out of their wits with this siren of doom.

It sounds like a fog-horn and being a two note, hyphonated exclamation it harks back to the original H.G. Wells story as far as I can remember. Jeff Wayne also maintained the same structure from his famous effort - "ooh-laa"

Maybe they referenced Goldsmith's Alien and used a digeri-doo with plenty of resonance and appropriate distortion thrown in?

I watched the film Sunday and the sounds the probe in the basement makes sounded like a reference to the 1953 film

I played the hell out of the old album. Hopefully I can scrape together enough dough to buy this before it sells out.

I am not surprised at this. Gene Barry and Ann Robinson from the 1953 movie appear at the end of the film as the grandparents.

I ordered Monday night, got a shipping notice email Tuesday afternoon (2:40pm my time, so 11:40am Intrada's time), and the USPS tracking indicates it will be at my house "Friday by 8PM"

If you bundled it with any albums that are currently out of stock - or went out of stock after you placed the order but before it was fulfilled - the entire order will not ship until those items come back in stock.

I was going to order it along with Robin Hood 4CD, but saw that it unfortunately went out of stock already, so I removed it from my cart before submitting to get WOTW right away
