We're still waiting for confirmation that Williams is scoring this film, correct?

Supposedly Lynch is playing John Ford

That's been 'announced' (or leaked)? That was my guess, but certainly only that, a guess!

Williams confirmed!

Williams was unavailable for this story as he is finishing work on the score for Spielberg’s next film, “The Fabelmans,” expected to record next month in Los Angeles.

This is the biggest gap between Williams/Spielberg collaborations since it all began with The Sugarland Express 48 years ago

There was 4 years in between Schindler's List (1993) and The Lost World (1997)

And then 4 years again in between Lincoln (2012) and The BFG (2016)

But The Fabelmans (2022) will arrive a whopping 5 years after The Post (2017)

Indeed, but there are mitigating circumstances.
Spielberg choosing WEST SIDE STORY, which already came with a score*, READY PLAYER ONE clashing with SW9 and THE POST, plus the whole Covid pandemic situation.

Let's just hope it's only one year between the next SS film he scores.

*and he still got some kind of music credit on that one.

Variety Article…

Williams was unavailable for this story as he is finishing work on the score for Spielberg’s next film, “The Fabelmans,” expected to record next month in Los Angeles. The film, inspired by Spielberg’s own childhood in Arizona, is slated for a Nov. 23 release.

Calm Down Gurls! Lol.

While most here didn’t know John Williams had spoken with Spielberg and seen The Fabelmans. And already had written the score and now is prepping for a Recording.

The Fablemans is CLEARLY in trouble. Why else would they frantically add David Lynch to the cast so late in the game (presumably via emergency reshoots), if not to try to ups the film’s sex appeal for younger viewers?

I'm sure there will be a last-minute panic change with the music as well, and that this film be remembered as the first in a long series of fruitful collaborations with Spielberg's new regular go-to composer, Basement Jaxx.

I detect some snark about Basement Jaxx in this post, which is really just sad. So far NOBODY has heard Basement Jazz’s score to The Fabelmans, not even SPIELBERG himself, because it doesn’t EXIST yet. I’m sure Basement Jaxx will do a great JOB.

I randomly had the thought that I hope this score is solo piano. Maybe a mixture of jazz and intimate drama, not unlike an approach Dave Grusin might take but filtered through Williams's voice.

Okay, carry on.

This year, he will complete what he expects to be his final two films: “The Fabelmans,” loosely based on Spielberg’s childhood, and a fifth installment in the “Indiana Jones” series.

“The Fabelmans” has been particularly emotional, he said, given its importance to Spielberg. On a recent day, he recounted, the director wept as Williams played through several scenes on the piano.

Williams said that he expected “The Fabelmans” would be the pair’s final film collaboration, though he added that it was hard to say no to Spielberg, whom he considers a brother. (Spielberg, for his part, said that Williams had promised to continue scoring his films indefinitely. “I feel pretty secure,” he said.)

The article also says that Williams expects this film to be his final collaboration with Spielberg. (Spielberg seems to be feel otherwise, though.)

Something about this entire project just sounds…… terrible.

Now, let me out that in some context. I’m a huge Spielberg fan, and have followed his career extremely closely since Jaws first blew me out of my seat in the theatre. Even his most risible movies like Hook and The Terminal have something brilliant about them*. And I’m fascinated by The Beard’s life story as a something-stone weakling, a bullied nerd who won respect through his ability to make 8mm movies.

But I really don’t see that as a movie I want to spend 2 hours with. And it seems oddly self-indulgent of Spielberg to make it himself.

*I don’t count Crystal Skull in this - the film is irredeemably awful from the first frame to the last and has nothing good about it at all. Seriously, nothing.
