....I only watched TRL once and maybe it needs a second viewing but I remember a lot of narration and landscapes. A little artsy yes, anything wrong with that no. Just not my taste at the time. Of course I was younger and never heard of Hans Zimmer before either so what did I know? I felt the same after one viewing. Yes you need to see it again. Then make up your mind. Bruce

Track list from the LLL Email flyer: La-La Land Records, Fox Music, 20th Century Fox and Sony Music proudly present the 4 CD expanded and remastered reissue of renowned composer Hans Zimmer’s (DUNKIRK, INTERSTELLAR, THELMA & LOUISE), masterful original motion picture score to the 1998 epic WWII drama, THE THIN RED LINE, starring Sean Penn, Adrien Brody and Woody Harrelson, and written and directed by Terrence Malick. Having been present at the film’s scoring sessions, Reissue Album Producer for 20th Century Fox, Nick Redman, describes composer Zimmer’s score as, “…a gorgeous tapestry unfurling before us, shimmering majestically in the air… There were many moments where the score moved one to tears: the juxtaposition of music with image was so affecting.” Finally, this powerful and important score has been given a deluxe treatment worthy of its breadth and scope in a new presentation that is greatly expanded beyond its initial soundtrack release - with a bounty of never-before-released material. Discs 1&2 present the film score as written in chronological film order (Disc 2 also contains additional alternates), while Disc 3 features the remastered original 1999 soundtrack album and Disc 4 contains RCA’s album of Melanesian chants from the film. Produced by Neil S. Bulk and Mike Matessino, and mastered by Daniel Hersch, this special release, approved by the composer and Alan Meyerson (scoring mixer) features a 36-page booklet with a note from album producer Nick Redman and exclusive in-depth liners by writer Jeff Bond, including new comments from Zimmer. The elegant art design is by Dan Goldwasser. This is a limited edition of 3500 Units. La-La Land Records dedicates this release in memory of producer Nick Redman (1955-2019). Yes you need to see it again. Then make up your mind. Bruce Indeed, my esteem for the movie sure improved considerably after a second viewing. First time I saw THE THIN RED LINE, I was a bit overwhelmed, and I was unsure what to make of it. I should mention that it was back then on a VHS tape and tube television. Second time I saw it a few years ago was on a big screen television with high-definition image and sound, and now I think the movie is a masterpiece, one of the truly great (war) movies of all time. I put the "war" in parentheses because the movie is great no matter what genre, and also because the movie is not really about war, that's just the backdrop. Hans Zimmer's score I liked right away though, I think it's one of the best things he's ever done.

I really hope it has the orchestral version of the Melanesian chant that was used in the trailer, it's a staggeringly gorgeous theme, and it's not on the original CD. The chant itself is on the second chants CD, but the orchestral arrangement is breathtaking. Looking at the tracklist, it would appear (but I can't say for certain) that we might be out of luck here... It’ll be on there. Not sure of the track name yet, but at 4 discs there’s no way it’s not included.

And it seems there's a track on CD1 called "Welsh and Witt talk". I hope it will be that. (The question mark is in my head, though, because if the CDs are in chronological order this track seems a bit early. I recall this scene was much later in the film. But, then again, I saw the movie years ago so I could be wrong.)

Sure, but if you already have one and won't listen to another other one, that's in fact $30/CD for what you'd want. Though granted you did 'speak for yourself', I suppose... I acknowledge that, TE. It's actually a reason why I (being unemployed at the moment) haven't gone after some of the recent expansions (e.g., Apollo 13, as I own an original copy of the Oscar promo). For me, it's a case-by-case decision. With TTRL, as mentioned in my post at the beginning, getting that one single track, an instrumental arrangement of one of the Melanesian hymns, and not even by HanZ himself, is actually one decisive factor why I'm going after this new release. All I can do now (as long as there's no confirmation from the Monkeys) is to hope that it's included. Then again, the country I'm from and currently living in, is going down the drain, and fast, so why not live life to the fullest, enjoy the music you love and support a record label that's been doing top-notch work these past few years? PS: Yes, the bottle of liqueur is empty...I'll be de-inebriated in about an hour, I promise!

Too bad that out of 4 CDs one is completely useless and one more everyone has already. First 2 CDs would be more than enough and not as insanely expensive. To be fair, it may once again be a case of Lalaland being contractually bound to release this the way it is. As much as we (or just you or I) might have wanted this to be the alleged six hours of recorded material...I'm a happy camper to get this at all. I suppose that, as often is the case with HanZ, there will be enough differences between the film score presentation and the OST to warrant purchasing this set. Speaking for myself, yes it is pricey, but breaking it down, it's $15 a CD. Same with Titanic, which I hope will come back in-print so that I can order them together to justify the high international shipping costs. Bonus: I'm supporting the Monkeys. Win-win, as far as I'm concerned. I'm just happy to hear more of this great score before I leave this world. Sure I completely agree and will support the monkeys... but I have to agree with TerraEpon as well... Since I have zero interest in some chants 80-90 % of which haven't even been included in the movie (just like those useless traditionals being pushed with every bigger Titanic set), 30 USD per interesting CD is actually quite a lot. Since I am quite fond of the score (even got it signed by Zimmer when he was in town) and I am one of the few I know who actually liked the film, I am still getting a copy when I can combine it with something. BUT since I know several people who would be interested if the price was more affordable I doubt many of them will be still interested if they have to pay 30 per CD that is interesting for them. I could probably find perhaps 5 others who might be interested if it was released just as 2 CD set (or 3 if the original album had to be included for contractual reasons), but doubt that more than 2 (including myself) will be that eager to spend 60 USD for only 2 interesting CDs.

Re; two cds i already have I should be able to trade them in at Amoeba for five to ten bucks in credit. I will then have room on my shelf for the LLL. BTW MELANESIAN CHANTS is spectacular. So what if only three are in the film? Open your ears to some wonderful music! Brm

I'm not happy about acquiring 2 CDs that are completely worthless to me, as I already have the original sdtk and have zero interest in the vocal chants and songs disc, but I am extremely thrilled to have this complete score after all this time, with alternates included. In the end it's a glorious expanded film score release of a glorious film score, but the release as a whole ain't so glorious. I really try not to complain when a score this incredible is finally gifted to us (with all the hard work that accompanies its production), but paying an extra $30 for 2 unnecessary discs does make me feel like contributing to that part of the TRL conversation.
