I was 24 - the First Blood sessions were at Abbey Road Studio 1 in the late summer of 1982. Second tpt was Simon Ferguson - freelance player who worked with many orchestras, groups, sessions, including The Academy of St Martins and Philip Jones Brass; third tpt was John Hardy - Principal Cornet and my colleague at the ROH Orchestra Thank-you Ian for that clarification. I recalled reading it was Maurice Murphy, so either the source I read was in error, or I remembered wrong. As long as you're here, can you shed any light on the trumpet overdub for the cue when Rambo breaks out of the police station? It is heard in the film but not on any of the album releases. https://youtu.be/VZqVJVR9IBc?t=129 https://youtu.be/YqsQ4k28hmU?t=123 Oh, and gorgeous solo work on that score!

But has this film version of The Razor ever survived? Anybody at Intrada may help the issue? Years ago, someone I knew had a cassette dub of that cue with the overdubbed trumpet. Where he got it though, I've no idea. I'm guessing Goldsmith decided he wanted that cue to have a little more "punch" and had someone come in and record the overdub (either in London or later after returning to California). I wish hadn't gotten rid of my old trumpet. I could overdub it myself!

We don't even have time to do Spotlights on all the Goldsmith albums that get released, Thierry, much less trying to add to our already packed to-do list! (We never found the time to do ones on such important titles as Masada, Looney Tunes: Back in Action, or the total premiere of Shamus!) I was at one point hoping to do a Spotlight on the occasion of Quartet Records' new LP edition of the Rambo trilogy but for various reasons we had to scrap it. Only so much time and the Goldsmith release train keeps chuggin' along... meanwhile thanks to all these wonderful releases and accompanying Spotlights our regular Odyssey slows to a crawl... In 2018 (at a frankly non-sustainable pace) we put out 16 regular episodes, not counting Interviews or other special eps. In 2019, we put out 8 regular episodes. (The Interviews and such increased.) In 2020, we put out 5 regular episodes. (This was the year I created the Soundtrack Spotlight sub-series, originally inspired to help the labels during the pandemic.) In 2021, we again put out only 5 regular episodes. (We produced a whopping 11 Soundtrack Spotlights though, having to sadly skip over the three I mentioned above!) This year (2022) we've put out a shocking 3(!) regular episodes...though we are hoping to get out two this month! But I think we've produced more hours of content in 2022 than any previous year (much of that...Spotlights!) It's a challenge when you start a podcast about your favorite composer and he was THIS prolific... and this popular with the labels! A good problem to have, of course. Yavar

If Intrada or some other label puts out a new edition of First Blood with the missing film take-with-trumpet and whatever other improvements... I'll do my best to put together a Spotlight episode for the occasion. Yavar

Seems like the same take to me—on the Quartet at least—and just how the mix was laid into the film. But the main thing that’s cool is knowing Ian Brown performed it and has graciously participated in this thread! Chris

Yes, I hear not much of a difference as far as the trumpet is concerned in the two versions, except the film version sounds like a more condensed (possibly mono?) mix to me on YouTube (though I only listen to this over build in Laptop speakers here, as I don't have my laptop hooked up to my hifi system), so that may be why the trumpet appears more pronounced... There doesn't seem to be a trumpet overdub nor does there seem to be a difference between the two takes. (But again, I just sampled the provided clips on my PC via Youtube, so that's not exactly state of the art audiophile equipment.)

It's a challenge when you start a podcast about your favorite composer and he was THIS prolific... and this popular with the labels! A good problem to have, of course. Yeah, I was suggesting The Goldsmith Odyssey cover new releases in its first months, back when I was just a correspondent. The reluctance was understandable - it has all but derailed us. I mean, when the idea became a reality, with the August 2020 release of The Don is Dead, that had been the 8th Jerry release in a year's time (preceded by Air Force One, The Great Train Robbery, The Swarm, Morituri, U.S. Marshalls, Take Her, She’s Mine and Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea). That's reasonable, adding a little, extra one-on-one with an album professional once every 1-2 months. And sure enough, the next release was two months later, The Last Castle. Then they dropped upon us like fuzzballs from a vault of Quadrotriticale. In the 365 days from December 1, 2020 to November 30, 2021, 16 Goldsmith CD sets were released, representing 20 scores (see below). Of note, from March 19-Oct.25, we got 12 releases in 220 days. That's one every 2 2/3 weeks. In that same time period, The Beatles rereleased Let It Be. I'm just saying, who could see that coming? It remains a great problem to have, we definitely could not keep up, and when more and more people are willing to join us, great guests to a one, I don't think those Spotlights are going away.
