A Christmas Carol - Franz Waxman
It's A Wonderful Life - Dimitri Tiomkin
Home Alone - John Williams
The Nutcracker - Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky

Not including any songs here, because then we would have a lot more: "Holiday Inn" with the most successful pop song of all times (at least until now), "Meet Me In St. Louis",...

There is a very sharp Canadian thriller from the late 70s called The Silent Partner, set during the Christmas season. The score by Oscar Peterson is pretty good, but it's a good thing he didn't quit his day job.

The Mancini Santa Claus by Quartet is really wondrously good, and incredibly Christmas-y

Charlie Brown, always

Santa Clause 1994 by Michael Convertino is really very good

Arthur Christmas by Harry Gregson Williams is really good, the choral parts, just beautiful. This film is a joy too

Of Course Home Alone

I do think of Star Trek IV as rather Christmas music

1.) IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE - Dimitri Tiomkin's music fares better apart from the movie (which cuts this fantastic score off at the knees through omitting passages in favor of tracked cues by others).

2.) THE BISHOP'S WIFE - One of Hugo Friedhofer's best works (Christmas or otherwise). The love theme never fails to move me.

3.) HOME ALONE - How can I ignore John Williams charming evocation of the holiday season? "Star of Bethlehem" is a stunner!

4.) THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS - Why is Danny Elfman so perfect for holiday-themed music as well as the darker, more nightmare-ish goings on? I'm just glad he is!!

5.) KRAMPUS - Douglas Pipes captures the essence of this dark fable brilliantly.

My favorite album to play during the season is the RCA collection LOST HORIZON: THE CLASSIC FILM SCORES OF DIMITRI TIOMKIN. For some reason (without being specifically about Christmas), it manages to capture the mood perfectly. Love it!

Mine are:
#05. Fitzwilly - John(ny) Williams

FITZWILLY? Never thought of that as a Christmas score, but it's been ages since I saw the film, so it might have some of those elements.

If I were to name five, I'd pick maybe:

John Williams: HOME ALONE 1 & 2 (I count these as one)
Danny Elfman: THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS
Alan Silvestri: THE POLAR EXPRESS & A CHRISTMAS CAROL (I count these as the same side of a coin too)
Howard Blake: THE SNOWMAN
Franz Waxman: A CHRISTMAS CAROL

Honourable mentions to FAMILY MAN (Elfman), JUL I FLÅKLYPA (Haugen), SCROOGED (Elfman), MIRACLE ON 34TH STREET (Broughton), THE LION IN WINTER (Barry)

Then there are those scores with a "Christmassy" vibe that aren't necessarily Christmas scores, like EDWARD SCISSORHANDS, HARRY POTTER, GREMLINS, old Disney scores etc. Didn't include those in the evaluation.

The Gimbel's robbery that takes place in the film's climax is on Christmas Day, thus qualifying it as a Christmas film. "Fitzwilly" was my first exposure to John(ny) Williams via the rerecording of "Fitzwilly (Make Me Rainbows)" on the "Ten Golden Years" 2 L.P. set (I would get both the Varese Sarabande Club edition C.D. and the Archival Edition C.D. from Music Box). And yes, I did see the feature film. Happy Holidays!!!

Only two that I can recall.

Die Hard

and

The Devil And Daniel Webster

This one based solely upon Sleigh Ride, from the re-performance on "Chiller", the Telarc CD by Erich Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra.

Cincinnati. What a strange word, now that I look at it.

Oh... and Star Wars. When it played around Christmas time and I saw it the 17th time (or something).

Home Alone 2 - It's better than the first, and contains all the highlights from the first.

Scrooge! (Leslie Bricuisse) - This thing just oozes Christmas atmosphere. I don't even particularly like musicals, but this one just has a sound.

A Christmas Story - Zittrer and Zaza didn't reinvent the wheel, but they did capture classic
Christmas tones and the fun of childhood perfectly.

Santa Claus The Movie - Mancini made an epic that wears its heart on its sleeve, without shame.

Gremlins - Not really "Christmassy" sounding, but I give it a spin every December. In fact, I just played it today. Make it Shine!
