James Newton Howard on composing the score and weaving sounds into music, in collaboration with Mr. Malick:

The film’s composer James Newton Howard says scoring the film was a highly collaborative process.

“One of the early ideas Terry brought to me, was to incorporate sounds he had captured during production such as church bells from the villages, cow and sheep bells, the saw mill, sounds from the prison, and scythes in the fields,” says Howard. ”I took many of those sounds and processed them into musical elements that are woven throughout the score.”

Howard began his process after Malick sent him a series of short clips from the film without any sound or music.“I wrote very loosely to picture, but we were able to establish the key thematic material and sonic identity of the score. As we moved forward, we chose to work mostly scene by scene where I would write something that he would react to, and then he would often mould the edit to what I had done,” Howard explains.

Though the film takes place up against such an important historical backdrop, the film at its core is a human story. “I chose to focus on the emotional journeys and crises of conscience of the characters—writing music to reflect their story.”

Howard began while Terry was already editing the film. “After meeting with Terry at my studio in Los Angeles, I flew to Austin and met with his team to watch a cut of the film,” he says. “We worked primarily between March and May of 2018 and recorded everything in early June at Abbey Road Studios in London. “I felt the orchestra was best to reflect the vistas of St. Radegund. The solo violin throughout the film embodies the connection between our two main characters—performed by the violinist James Ehnes.”

Sounds interesting. I hope a CD release is in the works.

wow, film premiers 12 months after recording sessions... plenty of time for Malick to make 200 "final cuts" of the film and "destroy" JNH music score

I don't know how much score is in the movie but from the reviews I read people praise the James Newton Howard's music.

Assuming nobody was before him, J.N.H. may have broken the curse of multiple composers on a Malick film.

Curse? Most of the time, there's been ONE composer (except TREE OF LIFE, which had both Townshend and Desplat). Unless you're talking about the classical compositions, which are also present in this film.

No.

Counting unconfirmed composers, too, I got:

  • "The New World": Hans Zimmer, to J. Peter Robinson, to James Horner.

  • "Tree of Life": James Newton Howard to Alexandre Desplat.

  • "To the Wonder": Jerod Tate (some left in) to Hanan Townshend.

  • "Voyage of Time": Ennio Morricone to Simon Franglen. And I doubt Hanan Townshend came in there to do some patch work (though I could be wrong).

That's a trend going back to 2005, only missing two films (I'm of course not counting shorts).

And I swear another composer was originally going to score "Knight of Cups", but I can't find it.

What's your source for those names? Hans Zimmer in THE NEW WORLD? JNH in TREE OF LIFE? Morricone in VOYAGE OF TIME? Are you seriously suggesting these composers provided (uncredited) new music for these films?

Morricone being hired was a big deal; there was more than one thread here. We never did solve the mystery of what happened.

Sure, but being hired, and then disappearing from the project, is different than composing actual music for it.

Did I say there was music composed? No, I said changes in composers and in my listing post I said I was also including rumors.

I wonder what Morricone thought of working with Malick on 'Days of Heaven' ?

Ah, my favorite film of all time, and my favorite Morricone score! The FSM release is a godsend.

The rumour about JNH composing "The Tree of Life" is true. JNH himself said in an interview that he is composing the music for a new Terrence Malick movie, which at that time was "The Tree of Life". I don't know what happened (scheduling conflicts?) but in the end Alexandre Desplat composed the music. Anyway I'm glad that finally JNH and Malick worked together on "A Hidden Life".

Sure. Composers have come and gone; but when Justin phrased it as 'multiple composers on a movie', I took it to be new, original music by several composers ending up in the same film. Which really hasn't happened very often in Malick's filmography.

I'm looking forward to EVERY new JNH score, in the hope that that's the one.

    The definition of insanity.

    Why?

If I hadn't had that attitude, I wouldn't have gotten -- and appreciated -- a few recent good JNHs, like MALEFICENT, THE NUTCRACKER or the Silva HUNGER GAMES compilation. I have high hopes for A HIDDEN LIFE too, even the film itself has received mixed reviews.

Heck, I'm open to positive surprises from ALL film composers I generally dislike, or have "lost faith" in, not just JNH.

Thor, have you heard anything from your colleagues regarding the release of this film? I note that there is still no trailer released. Thanks.

In Hungary it was released two years ago. I guess, in most of the countries too.
