I’ve been listening to the set for the last couple of weeks and it's absolutely terrific. As usual the assembly and sound from Bulk and Matessino is astounding and Jeff Bond's liner notes are insightful and entertaining. I haven’t always been the biggest fan of Dan Goldwasser’s art direction but his work here is as good as anything else out there, beautiful stuff (I also liked his work on ‘The Thin Red Line’ earlier in the year), that is in no way meant as a backhanded compliment.

Following the expanded ‘Robocop 2’ earlier this year I’d been aiming to pick up Rosenman’s Apes scores so the timing was extremely fortuitous for me. It’s great music, brilliantly presented and with the Ape connection I can’t think of a release that would be more fitting for La La Lands 500th release. Thanks to all involved!

I’d also highly recommend the music to the TV series. Frankly, I’d never considered getting it and decided to give it a go because of the discount and I was already paying for international shipping. I’m really glad I did as I think the music is excellent across the board and very much in keeping with the sonic world of the film scores. It’s a great companion to the new set.

I've listened to the first CD so far, and it sound absolutely terrific. I've always loved this score, but with this release it's totally mesmerizing. Thanks to Mike, Neil, Jeff (for the excellent liner notes) and everyone else involved!

Has anyone else noticed that about 70 seconds of music are missing from "Beneath the Planet of the Apes"? They link the tracks "The Ape Army Approaches / Rape of the Ape Man". The LLL set includes the same edit previously released by FSM. I assume that edit was due to the missing material being in bad shape, but meanwhile it's been released in good condition on the isolated score of the Blu-ray. And no, it's not tracked music from other cues but a continuation of musical material from "Ape Army Approaches" not heard in any other track. I came across this quite by accident. Otherwise I would never have noticed.
That said, I'm still very happy with this set, too.

I seem to remember reading somewhere (the original FSM release liner notes, maybe?) that a short bit of score around that point was too damaged to be included.

Too bad it wasn't incorporated in the LLL release. Is that the only spot where the isolated track is more complete than the cds?
In general, did the isolated track present complete cues, or were they dialed in/out as might happen in the film?

This is how the music was recorded. Please note on page 11 of the introductory booklet where we have included the full cue list for the "Beneath" score. You can see that "The Ape Army Approaches" is cue R10P1 and "Rape Of The Ape Man" is R10P2. These cues are presented in full, as recorded, and nothing was recorded to be between them.

The film does indeed track in music there. It includes several portions of "Captured" and "Narrow Escape". Some of those edits are pretty obvious.

Thank you, Neil, I stand corrected. "Captured" does indeed make up for the bulk of what I thought was missing music (about 45 seconds).
However, I don't hear anything from "Narrow Escape" in the rest of the connecting music.
What intrigues me most are the last 21 seconds from the film version of "The Ape Army Approaches". They sound very much like a clean ending of that track. On the CD "The Ape Army Approaches" leads straight into "Rape of the Ape Man" at around 0:56, cutting off the last note of the ape army motif. In the film you can hear the note continue into 21 seconds of similar music before it ends on a final chord. Only then does "Captured" begin. Since that ending is not tracked from "Narrow Escape" where does it come from?
There are also about 4 seconds of music connecting the tracked music from "Captured" with "Rape of the Ape Man" (weird title by the way). Obviously they are not terribly significant and sound like much else of the score, but I can't find the exact spot they might be from. Probably just something I overlooked, but the film ending of "The Ape Army Approaches" still puzzles me.

I saw what you did there.

I had some time and went through the complete isolated score for "Beneath the Planet of the Apes" in detail, comparing it to the new release. To answer Last Child's question: In general the isolated score represents the music as heard in the film, with music being edited, dialed out and tracked into other scenes. I noticed two exceptions: "Narrow Escape" is missing completely from the isolated score, even though it's heard in the film, and the opening of "Mind Boggler" presents Rosenman's version in full.
As for "The Ape Army Approaches" and "Rape of the Ape Man", I'm sorry to say that the isolated score does indeed provide music not on the LLL release. "The Ape Army Approaches" has a real ending in the isolated score (about 21 seconds) leading into tracked music from "Captured" which in turn leads into "Rape of the Ape Man" with about 5 seconds of otherwise unreleased opening notes. Basically LLL present the FSM edit (part of their "The Ugly Bomb" suite). The FSM booklet stated this at the time: "The Ugly Bomb: Although the conclusion of Beneath the Planet of the Apes appears to have a lot of music, many pieces were tracked from earlier in the picture. Additionally, Rosenman's original cues for the final reel suffered damage over the years – and to top it off, there's no real ending. With this in mind, this final track – as apes overrun the mutant society – joins the usable portions of Rosenman's original (non-tracked) cues and ends with Brent's panicked jabs on the cathedral organ – his attempt to buy the world a few more seconds of life."
So there you have it. They joined the usable portions, not the complete recordings. Only that those few missing seconds from the isolated score (probably not available at the time) sound quite usable to me. For completists, it's good to have them, regardless in which form.
Just to be clear, I'm not belittling LLL's efforts. It's an effective edit which works very well. I just wanted to share this information with anyone who cares.

That's indeed interesting and thanks for telling us about it.

If it weren't my least favorite Apes score by far, I would probably care more. As it is I'm happy I was able to take advantage of LLL's 15% off Labor Day sale and placed my order a couple days ago! Can't wait to hear the Goldsmith scores and Rosenman's Battle for the Planet of the Apes in their best-ever audio quality.

Thank you for elaborating on the blu-ray track, and the explanation about the extra music. smile

I hate to mention this since I don't know if it's only cosmetic or serious, but as it occurred on two discs, it might be wise to check your own copies. I noticed a transparent hole or two in the topside artwork. They were on the edge of the silver band around the center. A minor issue with the CONQUEST two-disc tray - mine had a rough "nub mark" that scratched a disc.
