7. Goodbye Klingon / Goodbye Epsilon Nine / Pre-Launch (2:10) to 7. The Crew Briefing 2:12 Aww... Goodbye fun names. I always wished these were 3 separate tracks anyway. But I'm happy that Games and Spock Walk are separate. I'm not missing most of the alternates. I think the only tracks I'm missing from disc 3 are 24. Ilia's Theme (Alternate) (3:33) 25. Theme From Star Trek: The Motion Picture (Concert Edit) (3:25) but the discs are full to busting, so what can you do? Of course we still don't know which version of the Main Title opens the disc. Looks pretty terrific.

The film was shown on Film4 in the UK yesterday. I tried to watch it, but it's such a drag, painfully slow most of the time, and stilted, that I had to bail. I love the thought of the film - and the aforementioned music and poster art - but not so much the actual viewing of it. That's interesting, I always loved the deliberate pacing, it left a lot of room for thoughts. That's my experience when I first watched the movie many years ago, that it was epic and vast. On the other hand, most people prefer Wrath of Khan, which I always thought was a weaker (and cheaper) movie.

Wrath was absolutely much cheaper, I think it was $12 million in that day, which even in today's dollars is only like $50 million or something. Wrath is almost everyone's favorite, I like it, but it is not my favorite either. But amongst the genre efforts these days Wrath is a pretty good little film, with actual characters with actual words and ideas. It is not epic, or jaw dropping or gorgeous though, the way that TMP is. I would also enjoy the Horner score more overall if I did not hear so many echos of it repeated in so very many later scores by Horner. Between Krull and Wrath, it is a little bank of tunes that Horner tapped into over and over and over again

WOK was only cheaper in respect to the budget. It's still visually grand.

I find STAR TREK - THE MOTION PICTURE was an attempt to make an actual science fiction movie, more in line with movies such as 2001 - A SPACE ODYSSEY, while the SF element in Khan was basically just a McGuffin and pretty much uninteresting. I still enjoy KHAN and its smaller scale for what it is, and it sure put James Horner firmly on the map (I love the score), but it's not even my second favorite STAR TREK movie. (That would be INSURRECTION.)

I just dipped into it, I couldn't sit through it all again, it's so slow & mannered (you'd never guess that it was made in the same year as Alien...another great Goldsmith score). I know the film has its fans, but I just think it's a terrible movie. "terrible movie" well, if so you have never seen Super Mario Brothers. TMP is NOT a terrible movie, just a movie that is not your cup of tea.

I think this film is terrible, & you disagree, fair enough (two different opinions of the same terrible film).

Yet, Alien isn't slow and ponderous? Slow, yes. Ponderous? Not to me. Alien masterfully draws out the suspense because it takes its time, like a nightmare that you can't wake from. The filming and acting style of Alien is quietly observed and presented casually – you feel like you're just hanging out with real people, and then there's a pretty nasty alien killing them. TMP, for better or worse (I think worse, others disagree), is filmed much more classically, every moment feels studied, none of it feels spontaneous. Don't misunderstand, that's a completely valid directorial choice, neither is automatically better than the other. But it contributes to why I find one slow and the other compelling.

I was being slightly sarcastic. But didn't it take the Nostromo like an hour and a half to land? (again being slightly sarcastic.) I haven't seen the film in decades but I remember very drawn out sequences like that.
