Paycheck: The Deluxe Edition (Music From The Motion Picture) (2-CD)

Regular price $ 24.98

John Powell burst into film scoring with a magnificent, emotional and modern soundtrack to John Woo’s iconic hit, Face/Off (1997). Six years later, Woo and Powell reunited for Paycheck (2003), a sci-fi techno-thriller based on a 1953 short story by Philip K. Dick (Blade Runner, Total Recall).

Ben Affleck stars as a programming engineer who undergoes a voluntary memory wipe to protect his client’s secrets—but upon going to collect his paycheck, he is given an envelope of seemingly random trinkets and items. He must use these clues to unearth the terrible secrets of his own project.

By 2003, John Powell had already scored The Bourne Identity and had his finger on the pulse of the modern action-thriller score. Paycheck blends synth and pop-rhythms with orchestral scope and, most importantly, Powell’s impeccable sense of taste. Despite almost non-stop action and suspense, he focuses on emotion and utilizes melody to elevate the proceedings.

Paycheck was released by Varèse Sarabande at the time of the film. This 2CD set Deluxe Edition greatly expands the playing time to over 95 minutes, and features new liner notes by Brian Satterwhite, incorporating new interview comments with Powell.

As a huge John Powell fan the samples Yavar posted in another thread didn't really "wow" me. I'll give these sound samples a listen and see if it changes my mind.

Huh! They were three of my favorite cues but I will say the score has a lot of variety and it's possible that if I'd picked different ones you would have been more wowed.

As I've said before, this is a Top 5 Powell score IMO. Just incredible. Can't wait to get this in the player.

Next up...The Bourne Supremacy please...aaaand go! wink

It really does seem like Powell is on a kick expanding (and sometimes premiering) his older scores... hopefully there will indeed be many more Deluxe Editions to come. For now, I'm super grateful for both this and How to Train Your Dragon (and Solo even though it's only digital). They certainly picked some of his best work to start with.

Yavar

Well, I know people are happy with The Public Eye (so am I) but I was kinda hoping Intrada was gonna release The Call of the Wild next week...

A huge loss. It's a brilliantly entertaining sci-fi action score with some amazing set pieces and themes.

This is what every Brian Tyler’s action score wants to be, but rarely is (if ever).

Probably my favorite Powell score. Good themes and action music. I already have the original so won't be double dipping.

Yavar definitely posted the best tracks. Hog Chase Part 1 and 2 had a lot of buzz on the various film music message boards when it came out. If you don't like those two tracks you probably won't like it. I play my CD many times a year to listen to those two tracks.

I don't expect the deluxe edition to change any opinions of the score - it's definitely more of the same.

If you didn't find the original album compelling, you are unlikely to change your mind about the deluxe version. If you loved the original release however, you're going to LOVE it!

I need to replay my original edition (47 mins?) cos I remember whittling that one down to a shorter programme!!

I'm glad this is getting an expanded release, it's one of my recurring listening Powell scores.

The only track I like from the previous CD of this score is the quartet, "Rachel's Party".
I don't see it here. Has it been re-named in the new edition?

Well, of course I listened to it, but only a couple of times.

Kind of respectfully disagree there. I’ve had a couple of soundtrack expansions that had the original albums get hardly a listen and have been a complete turn around in the new version.
One such example was Danny Elfman’s Dolores Claiborne. Apart from a couple of tracks it just never compelled me to listen often to it. With the expansion I found it a completely different experience listening from start to finish with the added cues throughout just bringing the whole thing ...’together’. I’ve practically worn out the new version !
Not saying it’s always the case but Elliot Goldenthal’s Pet Semetary was another example of this. Obviously if you hate the original it’s not going to change but for the scores that you are a bit indifferent to, it can be night and day.
