I would assume, based on the $10 difference in price, that one is probably the standard release and the second is the deluxe release featuring the "complete" score.

I wonder how accurate the product description is at this point. Each release is listed as being only one disc.
Probably not very at this point in time as recording is almost certainly still ongoing and if the previous score is any indication will be for some time!
Anyone know if Shore prepared extensions, composed new material for the longer cuts of The Hobbit films after the fashion of The Lord of The Rings' Extended Editions?
Hoping not to stumble over any clumsy music edits when Hobbit, Living Large and Longer streets on Blu-ray this November.
I pre-ordered last time trusting in Shore. It was a mediocre score at best, much to my disappointment. Two CDs worth of music, which upon editing down gave me just over 30 minutes worth listening to. I'll be waiting till after release before I consider if I will buy the 2nd.
I utterly adore the score for The Hobbit. In fact I prefer it to The Two Towers after having given it time to work its magic, become more familiar with the film and score over the past six months.
I'm just glad there are still composers out there being sought out to write these 'old fashioned' thematic type scores, as by and large it seems to be a dying art.
Can't wait for part 2 where - by Jackson's own admission recently - Shore is freed from many of the expected/required thematic reprisals/hints/nods to the previous films, and can really 'let rip' with part 2...

Totally agree! I initially found the Hobbit to be a little underwhelming, but having had more time to digest it, I've fou d it to be at the same level as the original trilogy scores. I too also recall the interview with Peter Jackson where he said An Unexpected Journey was frustrating for Shore because Jackson specifically requested a lot of repeated material from the first trilogy and that the two latter films would have substantially more new material. I have a hunch that the next two scores will be seen as less of a retread and will be better received by the film score community.
And there's still the mystery of what the Bonus tracks at the end of the deluxe Unexpected Journey soundtrack were actually meant for. Anyways, I'm definitely on board for December, looking forward to it!

Also, Jackson noting how #1 was frustrating for him and Shore because they "had" to use so many old themes and motifs is borderline bullshit, because Shore had written enough original material (as heard on the OSTs) that then was replaced by either straight regurgitations of music from LotR or new music that much more heavily borrowed older themes and motifs.

Maybe they "had" to use those themes because the movie wasn't working well, or testing well, with the score as written - or without that familiar baseline.
I think the 'reprised' music fitted in perfectly well, and logically.
For example, The Shire needed the Shire theme again (especially - really - as it's now the FIRST film in the canon now), as did Bilbo. The Necromancer needed a hint of the menace of 'things to come' in Lord of the Rings, again made perfect sense to me. I thought all the 'nods' to the original 3 scores was done very tastefully.
By no means was the score drenched in nods to the past (or, really, future!) at all...
I didn't see anybody complaining about the use of previous themes from the Star Wars saga in Episodes 1, 2 and 3...
