Who else remembers this? A sweet, sentimental, but never saccharine family saga from 50 years ago. Saw it on DVD last night. The lead performances by Maureen O'Hara and Henry Fonda hold up well today.

Max Steiner composed the score, and it would be well worth having if one could get it. Apparently a bit of it once saw the light of day on vinyl in 1978. Here's a thoughtful post from YouTube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LnDuEm54qlQ

The movie, filmed outdoors by Delmer Daves in the Grand Tetons and Jackson Hole, Wyoming, is beautiful to look at, even on an old DVD. Would love to see it as a Blu-ray restoration.

TV's THE WALTONS in the 1970s came from the same writer, Earl Hamner, Jr., but is only a pale reflection of the big screen achievement of SPENCER'S MOUNTAIN.

I certainly remember this movie. If I recall it was not exactly a box office draw but it played the matinee at our local theatre. It had a Walt Disney appeal. I am including a link to the Steiner score. It is a bit shaky on the sound but gives a nice sample.

I have the Main Title on a compilation of his scores entitled THE FLAME AND THE ARROW. The entire disc consists of new digital re-recordings by Kenneth Alwyn and the City of Prague Philharmonic. Great stuff !

Fine score during the twilight of MAX'S career, would love to see it release.

Would love to see this on CD. Best hope would be Intrada or Lalaland if they ever get around to music from the '60's.

I saw the film in the early 70s on tv. A nice film and a wonderful score by Max. I too would love to see a cd of the score.

There's also a main title re-recording on The Essential Max Steiner Film Music Collection, which sounds very nice. Might be the same album Harry's thinking of.

I'd like to see the film.

I too really like this movie and its score. I'm a sucker for almost any late-period Steiner. For instance I'd love to get ahold of things like ALL MINE TO GIVE, PARRISH, or SPENCER'S MOUNTAIN.

Ray, if you're looking at this post, do you know what '60s Steiner scores Warners still had? I know you've gone over some of this before, so apologize for asking again.

I like both the film and it's score Jim. I think a lot of people are unfamiliar with the film and thus the beautiful score. Many of Steiner's late 50s and 60s scores had such a wonderful lush and lovely sound to them. The twilight of Steiner's great career. Nice to see at least a few people know and appreciate real music these days. smile

Nothing from ALL MINE TO GIVE survives except a demo recording of the song. SPENCER'S MOUNTAIN only survives in Steiner acetates - about 20 minutes worth. YOUNGBLOOD HAWKE only survives in Steiner acetates, about 12 minutes; same with SUSAN SLADE. One cue from TWO ON A GUILLOTINE survives on acetate. Nothing on tape or disc from FORT DOBBS, RACHEL CADE, ROME ADVENTURE, JOHN PAUL JONES, PORTRAIT OF A MOBSTER.

I have no idea what Fox has on CHINA GATE, which was Victor Young's last score and was finished by Steiner.

I love Max Steiner's music in just about everything he's done with the exception of Spencer's Mountain. I watched the film a few months ago on TV but missed the opening credits. I was enjoying the film very much but there were a couple of scenes where I thought the music simply did not fit at all and sounded quite out of place! I remember thinking "who scored this?". Yes there were parts of the score that worked well so don't think I flat out hated it. But when the film closed I was genuinely surprised to read the score was by Max Steiner, a composer I admire very much. Perhaps I need to watch the film again and see if the score will sit better with me on a second listen.

Give the film another try Atham. I always enjoyed both the film and Max's very colorful score as well. Both remind me a little of Those Calloways. Maybe I'm the wrong person to comment, to me everything Max wrote is wonderful! smile

.....I have no idea what Fox has on CHINA GATE, which was Victor Young's last score and was finished by Steiner......

CHINA GATE was recently issued on a Blu-ray disc by Olive Films. That would mean that this production by Samuel Fuller's Globe Enterprises is no longer controlled by 20th Century-Fox (even though his FORTY GUNS of the same year---also from Globe Enterprises---seems to be).

IF music elements still exist.....and IF those music elements still exist at Fox (.....was it recorded there???) and weren't signed out or tossed years ago.....then perhaps it would be possible for a producer to round up the music elements and deal with the overall owner of an independent film like CHINA GATE---which might be a representative of Fuller's estate or attorneys for Globe Enterprises or even Paramount/Viacom who control the NTA/Republic library and have leased it to LionsGate and Olive Films for presentation on video.

It's a long way to travel, but it might be possible, if a producer were to take the search time.

I first saw China Gate on tv in the mid 60s. Always liked the film and all Samuel Fuller films. I was surprised to see both Victor Young and Max Steiner for the music credits. It's a great score, reminds me of The Left Hand of God. Nice song too. I recorded the MT and ET off tv back then. I don't think Victor Young did too much on the film but the main title soars like typical Victor Young.
I really hope a cd producer can find the tapes, if they still exist, and issue a soundtrack cd. Perhaps Fuller's widow has them? Or?

So The Waltons was based on this movie? I always wondered, given the close similarities between the two.
