Did anyone get the limited edition Blu-ray of the original 1959 JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF THE EARTH?

If so, I have two questions:

1. How does the video quality of the Blu-ray compare to the standard dvd?
2. Will the Blu-ray be released again....possibly by another label?

1. It is better than the DVD.
2. Possibly. Twilight Time's license is presumably for 3 years after which someone else can license or Fox could release it themselves.

1. Hotly debated - see the Home Theater Forum for a fascinating divergence of opinion
2. ???

GUYS:

Thanks for the info. Most of the "professional " reviews say the Blu-ray version is much improved over the dvd. Among the non-pro reviews, there is more of a difference of opinion.

I passed on it, so I guess I'll buy the dvd version.

This was posted about the Twilight Time Blu-ray version of JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF THE EARTH on Bluray.com in July:

"Well, it looks like we are going to see a better one. TT [Twilight Time] has let it drop on their Facebook page that Fox has done a 4K scan of the original camera negatives, which are too faded to yield a satisfactory photo-chemical interpositive, and are instead doing a full digital restoration. In fact, it's well under way and TT will be releasing it in 2015!!!!!"

I just heard from a fairly reliable source that Twilight Time is re-releasing four Blu-rays that were previously sold out:

1. JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF THE EARTH (remastered)
2. FRIGHT NIGHT
3. CHRISTINE
4. MYSTERIOUS ISLAND (probably)

I have the Australian Blu-ray of Journey, which is I read is the same master as the Twilight Time release, & I don't think it looks very good, it could really do with a good re-master, so this is good news, as it's a special film for me. I have the TT Mysterious Island, & it looks great.

CINEMASCOPE:

The reviews on the Twilight Time JOURNEY TO THE ENTER OF THE EARTH are at the extremes---professional reviewers love the video, but most of the non-pro reviewers says it's a slight improvement over the dvd.
I was looking at the Twilight and Australian versions, but now I'm glad I didn't buy either of them.

The funny thing is, I saw it in HD on the telly (Film Four UK) & thought it looked great, but was then very disappointed by look of the Blu-ray, very harsh & grainy looking. So I don't know what happened there. If you look at the caps over at caps-a-holic, you can see that the DVD & Blu match (Blu-ray a bit sharper), so it's an old master. I'm really glad that Fox are having another go at it.

Aside from Journey being remastered, this is good news for many of us for another reason: If any of the "limited release" films are desperately wanted and we miss out, it's not quite as painful knowing there might be a better chance of having "another bite at the apple", if not by the same company perhaps someone else, like we've seen with many soundtrack CDs.

Here in Australia, some of these "sold out" titles are so amazingly cheap, we can afford some of these until something better comes along. Certainly that's preferable than paying jacked up e-bay prices for the same thing. Check it out:

I have a copy of the U.K. Blu-ray of "Journey," which appears to be the same transfer as the Twilight Time, and sells for a fraction of the cost of the TT edition (shipping from the U.K. to the U.S. is fairly inexpensive).

It's an all-region disc, and plays perfectly on U.S. machines:

Yup, this is the one I have (a better cover than the TT release too), but it's not a UK release, it's Australian, selling on Amazon UK Marketplace. It also has Bernard Herrmann's isolated score. But I'm looking forward to the re-master. And while Fox are at it, how about The Lost World (1960), in many ways a terrible movie, but I like it, & it's no worse that Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea.

I just watch the DVD on my BR player and the upconversion makes it pop.

The Twilight Time Blu ray of "Journey to the Center of the Earth" is absolutely THE BEST home video version out there.

The new restoration should top even that.

Anyone wanting it NOW should attempt to find the OOP Twilight Time.

...or they could same themselves a ton of money & buy the Australian release, it's the same as the TT right down to the isolated music track. Like I said, I was a bit disappointed by it, & look forward to the re-master. I remember how thrilled I was when Fox released this on VHS in the late nineties, pan & scan & mono. We've come a long way since then.

I kinda wish they'd restore the 2 songs scenes Pat Boone did which were cut (or at least the footage as bonuses).

I think JTTCOTE was put out on VHS and Beta in the mid-eighties. What I remember best were the laserdiscs. JOURNEY was first a pan & scan LD, then it was released letterboxed on LD around 1990. Never having seen it theatrically, seeing it in full CinemaScope was like seeing it the first time. I hope that's the case when I see it transferred from the original camera negatives.

Oh well they're on Varese soundtrack CD. I'm glad they cut them out of the film.

Maybe in America, but not in England. We didn't get it 'till the nineties & never on Beta, I'd have bought it, I was a Beta man though & through until I had to switch to VHS. Mind you, this is all from memory, which not even I trust these days.
