Is there a complete listing available of all the RHINO releases of the MGM musicals?
I tried their website but nothing there. I realize that they have stopped producing them.
Still I would like to see a listing of what I have missed....

Thanks fellas!

To the list of classic MGM musicals, I suppose we should also add THE BELLE OF NEW YORK, which was originally a CBS/Sony CD, then a download, and now is a Film Score Monthly CD.

Then there were the other MGM musicals that were on the CBS/Sony CDs from the early 1990s, but never made it to the Rhino CDs:

Deep In My Heart (now a download)
Get Yourself a College Girl
I Love Melvin / Two Weeks With Love
Till the Clouds Roll By
Words and Music

Looks like you missed SUPERMAN. At the time of its release, posters here were referring to the Rhino SUPERMAN as the standard against which all soundtracks should be judged. Of course, there's been a lot of water under the bridge since then and a lot of tremendous, complete scores produced in multi-disc sets. But at the time, it was a stunner.

It still has a certain elegance, to be so compact compared to the Blue Box and yet deliver so many goodies.

I do so miss the Rhino releases - have most of the above, but would dearly love the series to have continued - there must be so much still to mine from the M-G-M music vaults. I still hanker after a "complete" "Till the Clouds Roll By", for example.

Looks like you missed SUPERMAN.

I've added SUPERMAN to the list. I also added SUPERFLY, which Rhino issued on CD in both a regular and deluxe 2-disc package in the late 1990s.

Should we include the Rhino (or Kid Rhino) cartoon titles? Or are we only interested in musicals in this thread?:

That's All Folks! Cartoon Songs from Merrie Melodies & Looney Tunes (2 CD)
Hanna Barbera's Pic-A-Nic Basket Cartoon Classics (4 CD)
Scooby-Doo's Snack Tracks: The Ultimate Collection
Josie & the Pussycats - Stop Look & Listen: The Capitol Recordings (Rhino Handmade Limited Edition)
Toon-A-Rama: Cartoon Network Favorite Themes
Toon Tunes: Action-Packed Anthems
Toon Tunes: Funny Bone Favorites
Toon Tunes: 50 Favorite Classic Cartoon Songs
Hanna-Barbera Classics: Volume 1
Hanna-Barbera: Cartoon Classics and Wacky Sounds (3 CD)
Hanna-Barbera's Xmas Sing-Along
Schoolhouse Rock (4 CD Box Set (lunch box or notebook versions) plus 4 individual titles and a "Best of" compilation)
The Flintstones - Modern Stone-Age Melodies - Original Songs From The Classic TV Show Soundtrack

By the way, despite some duplicated tracks, I own all the above discs - I'm a sucker for HB and WB animated music (and songs). wink

Bob, you've picked up several of the double-score Rhino CDs (2 scores on one CD), like LOVELY TO LOOK AT / TEXAS CARNIVAL and SUMMER STOCK / IN THE GOOD OLD SUMMERTIME, but there were others, too.

BEST FOOT FORWARD had 4 pieces (approx. 17 minutes) from ABBOTT AND COSTELLO IN HOLLYWOOD.

THREE LITTLE WORDS had 6 pieces (approx 28 minutes) from YOLANDA AND THE THIEF.

BROADWAY MELODY OF 1940 had 12 pieces from ROSALIE.

There was also material from MEET THE PEOPLE (approx 3 pieces), THE BIG STORE (approx. 3 pieces), and THE BARKLEYS OF BROADWAY (approx 6 pieces) on 3 other discs, but I've forgotten which ones.

None of these double score CDs (except SUMMER STOCK/IN THE GOOD OLD SUMMERTIME, I think) integrated art or description for both films into the covers, so you had to discover the inclusions of other material by reading the trayback.

There may be even more I've forgotten.

There was also a howard keel soundtrack compilation released by, I think, heartland music, authorized by rhino. Also the boyfriend lp download.

Thanks. I had totally left out BROADWAY MELODY of 1940. I've added that to the list and put the others in as parenthetical notes.

Five tracks from MEET THE PEOPLE were on the DU BARRY WAS A LADY CD. Also, one additional different track was on the "Alive and Kickin'" compilation.

Tracks from THE BARKLEYS OF BROADWAY appeared on the compilations "Fred Astaire at M-G-M" (5 tracks), "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" (1 track), and "George and Ira Gershwin In Hollywood" (1 track). The latter two single tracks may be duplicates of what's on "Fred Astaire at M-G-M." I'm not aware of any other tracks.

I don't know where THE BIG STORE may have appeared.

I've also noted that GOOD NEWS (1947) also included two tracks from the 1930 version

I've decided to not list all of the films included in the compilations. Most of the compilations have their detailed contents listed on Soundtrack Collector.

That's pointed out in the first sentence above, but I'll note it on the list.

Yes, really a wealth of releases. And there are still some I need to pick up. I still haven't gotten around to buy that "Warner Bros." box set for instance, although it's available for moderate prices these days. I think I have most of the material on this collection in my collection, though. It's sad that Rhino used the commercial recordings instead of the soundtrack versions on several tracks...

Here are some additions to the listing:
Santa Claus Is Comin' To Town/Frosty The Snowman
Singin' In The Rain (50TH Anniversary Deluxe 2 CD Box Set)
Hollywood's Best: The Thirties
Hollywood's Best: The Fourties
Hollywood's Best: The Fifties
Hollywood's Best: The Sixties (actually M-G-M's best wink )

Also, there have been uncountable budget releases and promo disks featuring material from the Rhino disks.

Unfortunately, I'm also unaware of any tracks from "The Big Store". Could be, that there's been a track on the LDs, but I can't remember.

I wish somebody would finally continue the MGM musicals series. I think some titles could even be improved over the Rhino versions...

One of the interesting things about the early "limited edition, limited pressing, individually numbered" Rhino soundtrack CDs that I've come across is that there is quite a large number of these early titles that DON'T carry a pressing number in its assigned space. I keep running into a lot of them with blank number areas at used CD stores around Los Angeles.

It appears that they (purposely?) pressed quite a number of CDs without numbering them, but whether that was done originally (and why would they do that?), or is some kind of over-pressing or additional pressing at a later date, I don't know.

Very curious, however.

I've added all of the above to the list. I’ve also added the following that were released by Rhino:

The “Billboard Top Movie Hits” series. Most of the tracks in that series of five CDs were licensed from other labels.

A Julie Andrews compilation issued in 1996, licensed totally from Columbia, RCA, and Buena Vista show and film score recordings.

The single CD version of THAT’S ENTERTAINMENT.

“Brain In a Box: The Science Fiction Collection” – a 5-CD set of film, TV, and sci-fi oriented pop tracks.

Two “Crime-Stoppers” CDs of cop and P.I. themes.

The song score from Bob Rafelson’s 1968 film with the Monkees, HEAD.

A CD of TV themes: “TV Land Presents Favorite TV Theme Songs”
