His style didn't come to fruition until The Rapture (1991), which was really his first mature film score.

As far as I know, he has said that he likes SOME of his earlier scores such as The Man with One Red Shoe, which he said was 'that is actually a score of mine that I like quite a lot' or something among those lines.

I dunno, MEN DON'T LEAVE is a pretty strong score, rich in that Convertino/Newman sound scape.
THAT'S the score I most want released.

Yes, his earlier scores hint at his current harmonic language, but he didn't actually create his own unique sound before The Rapture. I will quote a thesis about Newman's style:

"The most apparent Newman "signature" lies in his harmonic wiritng than anywhere else. Even his earlier scores, like Desperately Seeking Susan, hint at his current harmonic language: use of parallel fifths. The Man with One Red Shoe employs the same harmonic progression (parallel fifths) that is heard in Desperately Seeking Susan, and that is a testament to Newman's sound world that later comes to fruiton."

"When this writer asked Newman if he was aware of his signature sound, and if he could describe how it came to fruition, Newman said 'I am. I can tell you it began with a movie called The Rapture', There were two kind of very Charles Ives-ian chords that repeated. It was two chords that repeated".

I think it was when watching LESS THAN ZERO that I really took notice of Thomas Newman’s work. That was one my real ultimate wants over the years and it was a dream come true when it finally came out. I still regularly play it from start to finish.
Ive never really got into the ‘whittling’ thing. I often play a track from this or that but usually i’ll play something from start to finish and ( apart from some source queues ) like it the way it is. Thomas Newman’s more reflective albums are my go to stuff as regular listens. Apart from the usual its been the smaller stuff.. LITTLE CHILDREN, THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE, IN THE BEDROOM, WHITE OLEANDER that i go back to time and time again. There’s something about his dreamy style that makes me never want to hit the skip button.

I recorded a CDR a few years ago with music from 1984-1994, his golden period for me.

1. REVENGE OF THE NERDS - HOMECOMING
2. DESPERATELY SEEKING SUSAN - LEAVE ATLANTIC CITY!
3. THE MAN WITH ONE RED SHOE - END CREDITS
4. AMAZING STORIES - SANTA '85
5. GUNG HO - UNUSED #4
6. JUMPIN' JACK FLASH - BREAKING THE CODE
7. QUICKSILVER - SUITE STREETS
8. LIGHT OF DAY - ELEGY
9. THE LOST BOYS - TO THE SHOCK OF MISS LOUISE
10. LESS THAN ZERO - PENGUIN ROOM
11. COOKIE - SLAMMER
12. MEN DON'T LEAVE - THEME
13. WELCOME HOME ROXY CARMICHAEL - THAT WAS MY INTENTION
14. CAREER OPPORTUNITIES - LITTLE PONY
15. DECEIVED - END TITLES
16. THE LINGUINI INCIDENT - THE LINGUINI INCIDENT
17. FRIED GREEN TOMATOES - GHOST TRAIN
18. THOSE SECRETS - MAIN TITLE
19. THE PLAYER - THE PLAYER
20. WHISPERS IN THE DARK - MAKING LOVE
21. SCENT OF A WOMAN - MAIN TITLE
22. FLESH AND BONE - EVERYTHING HE TOLD YOU
23. JOSH & S.A.M. - END TITLE
24. THREESOME - THREESOME
25. THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION - END TITLE
26. THE WAR - ANGEL PEN

I kind of lost a bit of interest in him after year 2000, and I'm not really buying his albums anymore, but it's fun to return to his long-gone past.

Regarding following titles: Revenge Of The Nerds, Girls Just Want To Have Fun, Real Genius, Jumpin' Jack Flash and The Great Outdoors. Does anyone know how much music he wrote for these movies? Would love to see these getting a score release some day (and also why not official score release of The Lost Boys and Gung Ho too). I know there is about 30 minutes of score to Lost Boys so the amount of music is no problem there).

And why not a score breakdown to Revenge Of The Nerds, Girls Just Want To Have Fun, Real Genius and Jumpin' Jack Flash?

I remember there was quite a bit of music in REAL GENIUS, that one deserves a release. NERDS and FUN didn't have much score but FUN had some great cues. GRANDVIEW USA and RECKLESS are also great early TN scores.
As is LIGHT OF DAY from 1987, a more atmospheric score. He also wrote a dynamite score for one episode of OTHERWORLD in 1985.

This is what I said about THE GREAT OUTDOORS in 2009:

"The score was really varied, all kinds of styles thrown into the mix, and not very reminiscent of other TN-scores. There was a nice "love theme" and something a bit similar to Breaking The Code from Jumpin' Jack Flash. Some jazz stuff and also some orchestral suspense."

I wrote this about JJ FLASH:

"Quite a bit of score in the film, I'm sure there could be a 35-40 minute score album release from this, if any label would want to."

Nice selection there FB.
Looking back on this thread, with all his popularity there still isn’t a lot of movement in releasing his past works. Less Than Zero, Man With One Red Shoe and Flesh and Bone did come out but not too much else that wasn’t really current. Still regular requests appear for Men Don’t Leave and Deceived in particular.
Also, as a fan, I still can’t quite get my head around the fact i don't really like his Bond scores.
