The Telarc Chiller disc (CD-80189) features Sleigh Ride from The Devil And Daniel Webster, by Herrmann. I wonder if a release or a Prague re-performance might be in the cards for this.

I am assuming that there is more material from the project like Sleigh Ride... . I suppose I could be wrong, but then again its Herrmann.

Tribute Film Classics was working on it, originally were going to record it in October last year, but first there were problems, as I recall, with the score, which had been chopped up in the film and reconstructed by Herrmann into concert suites on paper, and as of September they mentioned the project wasn't happening because they couldn't get the rights or some materials something along those lines.

There's also the Koch release conducted by James Sedares which has the ~20 minute concert suite.

If you want the Christopher Young version, it's on iTunes under the title Shortcut to Happiness. smile

As one can read in several threads (including this one) there won't be a TFC re-recording of TDADW unfortunately. So there's "just" the 5-track/20-minute suite available on CD if I'm not mistaken.

Two questions: How much music is missing? And: What are the chances to see a complete release of this score in the future (original or re-recording)...?

Resuscitating this thread because I'm hoping someone can address the questions below.

20 minutes on which CD? link?

Does anyone know how much was recorded and how much survives if any of the original score?

Are there any plans among our favorite boutique labels to do something about this score?

Just watched the film again. It's stunning. I love listening to Herrmann's scores from this period. The Ghost and Mrs. Muir for instance blows me away.

TDADW/ALL THAT MONEY CAN BUY has long, long, long been a dear favorite of mine, the movie and the score. Herrmann certainly deserved his one Oscar for this picture -- and all the more glory that, like Monsieur Desplat this year, he won despite being nominated for two different films, usually a kiss of death because it divides the votes.

(Why he failed to get a nomination for PSYCHO is another matter, and one of the countless boners in Academy history.)

A favorite of mine, too.

Hard to believe this seminal score has not been given attention.

Since I've been listening to Herrmann's Jane Eyre (1943/4] and his The Ghost and Mrs. Muir I must have his The Devil and Daniel Webster as well. I'll bet the tapes survive.

Jane Eyre has an isolated track on the Fox DVD and Twilight Time blu-ray, you'd think someone would have pressed that on CD by now.

As far as I know, THE DEVIL AND DANIEL WEBSTER is only available on DVD, and has no isolated music track. Do you know something I don't?

As far as the "five-track, twenty-minute" suite, I presume this refers to to concert suite Herrmann prepared, which appears on a Unicorn CD conducted by Herrmann, a Koch CD conducted by James Sedares, and a radio broadcast conducted by Leopold tokowski, available on a limited edition NY Philharmonic CD set.

There are also some acetates of the recording sessions that exist, but some cues are missing.

Badly worded. I went in and fixed it. It's clear as mud now.

Have you heard these acetates from The Devil and Daniel Webster?

Herrmanns only Oscar winning score and there is no complete recording of it to date. What a pity.

It's in the Varese Fox box.

1960 was one of the greatest years in the history of film music. The official nominees....

Exodus...the Winner
Spartacus...my choice
The Alamo...imo Tiomkin's greatest achievement
The Magnificent 7...just a little western score by Elmer Bernstein

and
Elmer Gantry...

I would replace the Previn score with Psycho but of all the scores of 1960 which are the ones you prefer? They are all great. After all these years of the Academy making errors in judgment I say why bother. Just go with your instincts...

I agree. Now all we need is a statement of some "folks in charge" to say "we're on it" (original or re-recording).

Joe and Jim, this score is my number one "Holy Grail."

Any chance of me getting / begging for / groveling for / trading for a copy of whatever you have.

I'll fly out and shovel snow from your sidewalk and driveway, if it'll help!

Paul, thanks for reminding me of that embarrassment of riches. I, too, would have switched ELMER GANTRY, splendid as it is, for PSYCHO.

And I, too, would have voted for SPARTACUS.
