It´s strange, he was THE composer for the Star Trek franchise on TV. No one contributed more music, than him.
But he only had the chance to do one Main Title (DS9).

And what a theme!

I love the DS9 theme -- McCarthy did a terrific job! It should be pointed out that the melody owes something to Goldsmith's theme ... namely, the pitch content of the first four notes (and the final note of each opening phrase). I don't mean this to diminish McCarthy's theme in any way -- on the contrary, I think it's a subtle and clever move, which ties DS9 wonderfully to the TNG universe that birthed it. His extended concert arrangement of the theme is particularly good.

If I were producing a new CD of McCarthy's music from DS9, it would include suites from "In The Hands Of The Prophets," "Image In The Sand" and "What You Leave Behind."

*ahem*

http://www.amazon.com/Music-Star-Trek-Jeff-Bond/dp/1580650120/

The question is, I suppose, will there ever be a second printing! I hadn't realized the book had gone out-of-print and WAY up in price on the secondhand market. Guess I should've taken better care with my copy, which has become slightly dog-eared over the years. smile

I feel so stupid!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is almost like a satire. And believe me or not, when I typed the name "Jeff Bond", I had the impression that it rings a bell!
I didn't know, that it´s THE Jeff Bond who wrote these faboulous liner notes for the EMI/Capitol James Bond Re-Issues.

MEA CULPA!!! :-)

All right! I didn´t know that!
Where do you get these information, Jeff Bond? Are there any books, interviews or documentaries out there? Once he heard, that somebody is planning on releasing a boook about the music of Star Trek.

This sounds so funny know that I know he´s the author of "The Music of Star Trek".
I can't stop laughing about myself! :-D

The track "Docking at Starbase 74" is a perfect example of what I was referring to, when I talked about a general sense of adventure, optimism and awe.

This one really has a Horner vibe to it.

Nope, Ron Jones never used McCarthy's Picard theme.

So we have to wait, until someone will release the TNG scores of DENNIS McCARTHY one day, before we can enjoy the "Picard theme" again!

IF Mr. Bond will release that Ron Jones Box of TNG scores, than there is still the question, why not EVERY score from the series will be released (Paramount seems to give green lights to further ST releases)!?
For my personal taste, I prefer McCarthys style more than Ron Jones (even if his music for TNG would also be very welcome)!

Well, maybe some day........

I also would like to see a release of McCarthy's scores for the first two TNG seasons, but in my opinion he started to get boring with the beginning of season three. I assume after season two it was the first time Berman talked to the composer's about the stlye he wanted or something, I don't know. Season three is weird there because while McCarthy suddenly became more orchestral (and bland) instead of synthy (and melodic), Ron Jones was doing the exact opposite in some of his scores. I think "Picard's Theme" last showed up in "Yesterday's Enterprise" (it's also on the CD) and after that pretty much all theme music was gone when it comes to McCarthy's scores (with the exception of Courage's fanfare, thanksfully).

Since it wasn't mentioned in this thread before I would like to add that the opening music of the first episode of season two "Birth" is available as a bonus track on McCarthy's Sliders OST. It's a great piece of music and also includes Picards theme.

When it comes to releasing the complete music for TNG, I'm all for releasing all of Ron Jones stuff, but I don't see much sense in releasing every piece of music McCarthy composed. As I said, season one and two would be a really great release, but after that it's pretty bland with a few exceptions here and there of course. The same thing counts for most of the stuff Jay Chattaway was doing in the later seasons. But I wouldn't really mind some "best of"-collections (or even box-sets) put of with help of the fans or something, similar to what Lalaland did with his Galactica/Farscape-scores. But other than the already mentioned season one and two of TNG I'm actually more interested in getting more music releases for some of the later DS9/Voyager/ENT-era, since the composers had more freedom there (again) and came up with more interesting and sometimes really epic music.

I thought the bonus track is the "Past, Present, and Future Overture"?

Yes, that's the one. "Birth" is the name of the episode the music is from.

I don't release the CDs, I just write the liner notes. But speaking hypothetically, it would be very difficult to release McCarthy's TNG scores as a single set just because of the sheer volume of music involved--seven years of television episodes.

I started this thread back in june.
If someone would have told me, that a couple of month later, I'd "own" the music I was longing for all these years, I wouldn't have believed it!

Today my Ron Jones box arrived and I can't tell how happy I am!!!

It looks wonderful, the box is cool, the artwork is top notch!
The sound qualitiy is fantastic. Well, there's nothing I don't like about this set. Even the price IS justified.

Thank you guys again for the great effort!!!

I do hope more of the McCarthy/Chattaway scores will also become available at one point because while rewatching the tng episodes, I do more than occasionally come across a score I liked which isn't featured on the boxset, so the non ron jones scores are definitely not wallpaper.

I am also very much hoping for some more Dennis McCarthy releases. While many people seem to think that only the first two seasons of McCarthy's scores were good, I disagree. I found season 3 to be one of his best, especially episodes like 'The Ensigns of Command', 'The Survivors', 'The Hunted', 'Yesterday's Enterprise' and 'Hollow Pursuit' had some fantastic music. The ship attacks in 'The Survivors' and Danar's Capture/Escape in 'The Hunted' in my opinion is some of the best unreleased music from TNG. Even Season 4 and 5 had some great music (Galaxy's Child, The Wounded, Time's Arrow, Unification come to my mind). I do agree that the music for season 6 and 7 was fairly dull, one huge exception being 'All Good Things...'. I also think that not all of McCarthy's music has to be released, but there is still a lot that should be released.

Although I have to admit, that I did get what I wanted with the Ron Jones Box, I'd surely buy a McCarthy/Chattaway box as well.

Here's what Inrada's Roger Feigelson posted in another thread quoted by redpenguin:

And while the MP3 thread is closed, their FLAC thread is open.

Roger Feigelson posted this:

"This is Roger Feigelson from Intrada. This isn't even from my label and I find it heartbreaking. The amount of time and effort and $$$ that go into these releases to make it finally available and this happens? That's going to kill the market. These illegal downloads just seal the fate for there being nothing to steal in the future, because who wants to keep on investing in this stuff. I was thinking of doing some of the Dennis McCarthy/Jay Chattaway stuff to complement this set. No way I'm doing that now. This is no different than shoplifting from Best Buy. Just easier to get away with. Hopefully this person will see the light and pull it down."

I think it's rather an encouraging thought that someone even considered releasing those scores. Hope Roger Feigelson will eventually reconsider his initial and completely understandable (!) reaction after reading about the piracy act.

I hope Roger reconsiders. There are still plenty of people who'd go for more TNG, especially a smaller release which Intrada would probably do (I can't seem them doing a boxset).

I`m in for more Star Trek TV releases. There is so much ground to cover (TNG,DS9,VOY and ENT). Maybe in the same style as the Amazing Stories releases. That would be awesome.

I`m so pleased with FSM BOX SET 05. It sits proudly in my shelf. smile

I hope so too. We don't need a huge great heaping box set again. Just a small, minor release here and there.
