There's a suite of his music from HORROR EXPRESS, I believe... on LP, if not CD.

I emailed John Cacavas a few years ago and he CALLED me on the phone to chat! Blew me away. I was asking him about his score for HANGAR 18. (if the recordings survive)

John Cacavas' scores for Airport 1975 (released on CD by MCA Japan in '95) and Airport '77 are personal faves of mine.

His Horror Express (which is highly enjoyable) is available at SAE:

A compilation of some of Mr Cacavas' works was issued on a CD called "Behind The Scenes" ...

AIRPORT 1975 - brilliant on all counts.

Love those beautiful 70ish orchestrations!
There's also a very Airport-esque Kojak score by Cacavas (forgot the title of the episode).

The episode was titled Letters of Death with guest star Cristina Raines.

One of my professor's has a now out-of-print orchestration/arranging textbook written by Mr. Cacavas.

Some useful stuff in there, indeed. A smart fellow he was.

Was? He's not dead, as far as I know.

Count me in. It's a score that single-handedly fulfills all the clichés that you'd expect from a 70s' flick, including the wonderfully cheesy stuff (Bossa Nova style muzak – love this shit), and still pertains its very own signature, perfect stylishness and powerful impact. One thing I adore particularly is the conventionally arranged and recorded string section plus the high-pitched unisono 70s-style violins with lots of reverb. Together they give a smashing effect.

Love Cacavas’ Cop Show Funk, too! We definitely need more of that on records!

Does anybody know of a decent recording of the AIRPORT 77 theme as there was never an album released?

When I was a kid we went to Universal in LA and they had the 'Airport Theatre show' where they put you in the movie and you could take it home afterwards, they played a medley of both his scores before the show started. I'm assuming this was recorded specially and not commercialy avaliable?

Hi Dave

Unfortunately there does not appear to be one ... There is a Japanese 45 cover version which sounds a little like a high school band version on sedatives, the US 45 featured a slightly disco-ish "rhapsody' version with Roger Williams at the piano and I believe there are some other disco cover versions around. I once managed to piece together a version of the main title that omitted dialog by editing between the theatrical cut and the extended TV version which did some strange stuff with the music by placing it over newly-filmed footage and hacking it to bits.

This may bring back some fond memories of your visit to the Screen Test Theatre attraction at Universal....

There are. Spotify users can find one by searching for Airport '77. It shows up on a series of discofied "themes" albums (by various orchestras) entitled "I Grandi Temi da Film", including a bewildering array of themes, some of which are completely unknown, and some of which (Khartoum, The Mackintosh Man, All The President's Men) have no business being discofied. Some of the later albums are horrible sub-Bontempi keyboard bastardisations that wouldn't pass muster in a lift. Do a search for "Grandi Temi".

Right you are Hercule - in fact one can be downloaded (by US customers only) at Amazon.com:

http://www.amazon.com/Airport-77/dp/B000V8KDV2/ref=sr_1_13?ie=UTF8&s=dmusic&qid=1257622425&sr=8-13

Hopefully, now that Intrada appear to be releasing Universal's Gray Lady Down, the original tracks of Airport '77 may be a possibility. smile

Here's a fan-art mock-up to get all Cacavas fans collectively creatively visualising - let's all meditate on this and see what we can materialise ... smile
