Three big assignments coming up from Alexandre Desplat in the near future: "The Tree of Life", the new masterpiece by Terrence Malick, "Twilight: New Moon" and the new Wes Anderson movie "The Fantastic Mr. Fox".

Looking forward to all of them! And I already wondered, why it has been so quiet from him lately... wink

This guy seems to be scoring more films than the whole of Remote Control combined.
He's seems to be pulling the old Morricone/Horner shift, getting his name on about 8 film posters a year! Good luck to him, but I've noticed a sameness creeping into his scores lately.

Yeah, I think poor Mr Desplat might be falling into the hole that Gabriel Yared went down, which is that he was hired to write the same score over and over. Let's hope he can break out of it before it's too late.

I'm really disappointed that Carter Burwell isn't doing the second Twilight because his score was the only decent thing about the first movie (okay, maybe Kristen Stewart too!). I'm hoping Desplat comes up with something nice.

If you'll check Desplat's filmography, you'll notice that he has been always very prolific, with 4 or 5 scores out in a single year. What's probably making it more impressive is the fact he's attached to more big Hollywood studio films.

This year has certainly proven the most notable in terms of the number of high-profile films Desplat has been assigned to score. I was very disappointed that his 2007 output didn't result in an Oscar nomination, but hopefully 2009 will be different. My prediction is that "Chéri" will be the one to get him the nomination (my preference would be "Coco Avant Chanel", but as it's a foreign film I doubt it will happen).

Of course, "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" comes to mind with its Oscars for both Best Foreign Film and Best Original Score... although "Coco Avant Chanel" hasn't been quite the box office powerhouse that "Crouching Tiger" was.

"Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" was one of the most hyped movies of its year. "Coco Avant Chanel" hasn't had anywhere near the same recognition. For that reason, it won't get Desplat a nomination.

CHERI works better in the film than COCO AVANT CHANEL. This is not to say COCO AVANT CHANEL isn't effective, just that CHERI makes more of a statement and is more noticeable.

I would agree. COCO is a lovely thing in a nice film. CHERI is one of the rare essential things in a pretty unessential film. And I wouldn't be surprised if UN PROPHETE proved to be an integral thing in a fine film.

After GIRL WITH THE PEARL EARRING, I was most impressed with M.Desplat's work. Since then, however, I haven't heard a lot of his work that has impressed me, with the exception of THE PAINTED VEIL, which I liked very much, and which was sadly much underrated in its original release.

Can anyone here recommend scores of his? I bought a few, though I can't now recall the titles, and just wasn't impressed with them...

You should check out BIRTH (his masterpiece IMO).

Also: LOVE ETC. / THE QUEEN / THE CURIOUS CASE OF BENJAMIN BUTTON / THE GOLDEN COMPASS / AFTERWARDS

LUST, CAUTION is my favorite of his scores, a big, sweepingly thematic, romantic score. The main theme was stuck in my head for weeks.

It had been years since that had happened.

Probably my favorite score of the last five years, if not more.

Check out his French scores. Like Morricone his best scores were written for his homeland even though America often thinks both their careers started when they started to do big American studio films. That is far from the truth.

The obvious recent ones would be "Cheri" and "Coco Avant Chanel", plus "Benjamin Button" - but some of his earlier stuff - "Birth", "The Queen" - is pretty good, too.

That said I haven't encountered any Desplat score which I didn't like, and in particular two scores of his which I've enjoyed although I didn't see the movie - "L'ennemi intime" (Intimate Enemies) and "Largo Winch."

Don't look for TREE OF LIFE anytime soon according to this article:

http://www.cinematical.com/2009/10/15/terrence-malicks-tree-of-life-wont-make-2009/

I know the score has already been recorded as Conrad Pope mentioned working on it a couple months back on his Facebook page. I wonder how much tinkering Malick with do to the film and score.

My favorite Desplat score (so far) is LUST, CAUTION with GIRL WITH A PEARL EARRING coming in a close, close second.

After the experience Horner had with Malick on "The New World", I expect Desplat to be similarly screwed over. Certainly, if he thinks the score as written is going to appear in the film, then he's an idiot. I just hope that, whatever changes are made to the film, Desplat's score still fits. It's already bad enough that his score will be tampered with, but for it to be thrown out entirely would be very unfortunate indeed.

If Malick makes a great film, and the composer gets a great album out of it - as had happened the last three times - then we should be happy.

Well, yes, if Desplat's score is preserved on album I'll be happy.smile

Now that I think about it, they could release that album now, since it's all already done. smile
