Samples are up at SAE for this Universal France release of the wonderful Legrand score. For those that don't yet have it, or are unfamiliar with the score are in for a treat. For those well acquainted with the score and the Bay Cities release, sadly there is no extra music on this release and the sound quality remains disappointing.

I can only assume Universal France had the best elements available to them and this is the best we're going to get for this title. Still...if complete masters were uncovered, it would be a treat to see FSM or INTRADA give this important Legrand score the release it deserves....

Soundwise to my ears the Bay Cities sounds better.
But on the other hand you get "Robin & Marian" unreleased score, that's pretty nice.

As with most Universal France Legrand material, the source is coming from Legrand himself. I think we also used his tapes for Musketeers, because I don't think Bell (Arista, at that time, at least) could find them. I'd have to go back and listen to ours to compare the sound quality, but I was really disappointed in the Universal France release's sound on that score - maybe we had better mastering - Danny Hersch did and does really great work and sometimes that can make all the difference in the world.

As to Robin and Marian, no one loves and adores Legrand more than I, but boy would I have tossed out that score, too - the Barry is perfection and much more suited to the film that Richard Lester made. In fact, it's one of my favorite John Barry scores. The Legrand is interesting but I cannot see how it ever would have worked with the film. Perhaps that fellow who does those YouTube clips can restore some of the Legrand to the film and that would be interesting to see.
