Does anyone here have copies of the MUTEL Mood Music library 78's from the 1950s? I am looking for two cues used in 1950s television shows:

MFX-30 by Frank Standahl
Syn-F-272 by Fred Humbert

Any help or leads would be appreciated! Seeking for private use only and not for reproduction in any medium.

Thank you!

Wow! You're going back 50+ years, probably well before most members here were born!

What show(s) were the cues used in?

I have about a dozen cassettes of cues used THE ADVENTURES OF SUPERMAN, RAMAR OF THE JUNGLE, etc. from that 1950s period, somewhat digitally cleaned up. I don't think the skimpy paperwork that came with them gave any titles or index numbers, if I can even locate the paperwork.

I also have a few dozen LPs (CineMusic) and some other tape-to-CD transfers of TV cues of that period composed by Jack Shaindlin (a favorite of mine), who was involved with Mutel.

But finding any individual cue or two will be one hell of a challenge!

Ron,

The two Mutel cues were used in "The Adventures of Superman," second season, in an episode titled "The Clown who Cried." The cues have a circus sound to them:

Syn-272 by Fred Humbert is first heard in the episode at :59 to 3:53, and again at 7:12 to 8:26. MFX-30 by Frank Standahl is heard 10:23 to 11:40.

If you have these, please let me know. Pops and clicks ok.

That most specific information is a BIG help. I do have the SUPERMAN cues arranged by season and I do have the SUPERMAN DVDs, so I can spot the DVD and then listen for the cues. Things are looking up.

Hello Ron,

That does sound promising. I genuinely appreciate your willingness to help. I hope that you are successful in locating the two cues in your archive. Fingers are crossed...

After watching "The Clown Who Cried," I sampled over 200 cues on 10 cassettes.
(1) SEASON ONE - 2 cassettes
(2) SEASON TWO - 4 cassettes
(3) THE COLOR SEASONS - 2 cassettes
(4) SUPERMAN - ALTERNATE CUES - 2 cassettes...

There is unfortunately no circus music there.

That leaves us with two leads which I will let you pursue:

(1) PAUL MANDELL and crew
He wrote the informative liner notes for the Varese Sarabande (2000) release. Also credited in the CD inserts for their help are: Bruce Kimmel, Michael Lopen (research associate), Herschel Gilbert, Byron Chudnow, John Caps, Seth Saltzman, and Allan Asherman. Any and all may have some clue as to where this music can be found. Perhaps you can contact Varese concerning his contact info. Haineshisway is a regular poster or you can contact Bruce at his Kritzerland address.

(2) CHARLES THAXTON
He also posts on FSM and had a thread last year or so on SUPERMAN music and located a number of cues preserved in the KPM Music Library in the U.K. He is a real maven for this kind of music. Here is a link to the KPM "Archival" series from the 40s, 50s, and 60s.:

That's about all I can dredge up here in New Jersey. Hope you can locate the cues!

Ron, you are amazing to sort through such a large library of music to try and help. While I am sorry you weren't able to turn up the cues, I genuinely appreciate your courtesy and efforts in trying to help.

I sent off a note to Paul Mandell, and hoping he will reply. I will try the other gentlemen, and thank you for these suggestions as well.

BTW, regarding your cassettes, what are "Superman Alt Cues"?

don't forget David Schecter...he knows a lot about this stuff and I think MMM was looking at a SUPERMAN tv series release at one point.
I can't watch the "Clown" episode" right now because my DVD set is out on loan to a buddy.

Any lack of circus music is FORTUNATE, not UNfortunate.

Hi Ron,

Awhile back in 2009, you mentioned that you had ten (10) cassettes of Superman music from the Mutel Music Library. I recently found out from a friend that a company called Vintage Soundtrak or Vintage Music in the early 1990's sold the Superman Mutel library music through an ad or featured article in the Starlog magazine. The cassettes were sold for $20 a piece. My friend had purchased only two cassettes. He doesn't remember how many cassettes were sold. I am guessing that you purchased all of the ten cassettes that were sold by the company. My friend mentioned that a catalog and mimeographed paperwork which accompanied the order, listed all the track titles and storylines per cassette. He doesn't have the information anymore. I am hoping you can help me.

Is it possible, if you have it, to send a copy in pdf or word, of the catalog and mimeographed paperwork which contains the track titles, storylines, timings for each cassette?

Is it possible, if you have digitalized the music from cassette to wav, mp3, FLAC, etc., to obtain copies of all ten cassettes on CD?

I appreciate your assistance on this,

Thanks,

Seconding the request for anybody else's experiences with "Vintage Soundtrak" aka "Vintage Music."

I bought two cassettes from them in the 1990s of "Adventures of Superman" music and wish I could have afforded them all!

I have listed my experiences on two of my blogs, "Mark's Super Blog" and "Spock's Record Round-Up."

I would love to hear anybody's cassettes. I burned mine to CD.

Please shoot me an e-mail if you want any more info!

as for the original request, there are three Adventures of Superman cds (one from Varese, others unreleased from Percepto). The 2nd cd has the cue PARIS which sounds like circus music.

There's a guy who specializes in library cues, has 13 volumes of MUTEL library music. He wont necessarily know the content, but you can contact him via GEMM.

"The Clown Who Cried" also contained a movement from "Theme And Variations" by Miklos Rozsa, which was specially arranged for the library.

I still have an advertising mailer that Vintage Music sent out in 1991. It announced that an additional sixth cassette of background music used in the Superman show was available, which along with the original 5 cassettes encompassed all the music used in the series. Originally Vintage offered only 5 cassettes, but then offered a sixth cassette of additional music from Season 2 including "the extended circus music from 'The Clown That Cried." Unfortunately I never bought the sixth cassette after hearing the first five (nostalgic, but hackneyed IMHO). It's probable that the cues you referenced are partial uses of the extended cue. The 5 cassettes that I have do label all the cues included on them.

Hi waxmanman35,

Any chance of listing here the cues of the five cassettes for each season in sequence, including running times (if available)? Also would the original Vintage Music 1991 mailer have the cues listed for the sixth cassette of additional music from Season 2? If yes, can you please list the cues here as well? Really appreciate any help on this.

Also if anyone that sees this post, if you have any additional information on the cues from the cassettes offered through Vintage Music in the 1990's, please list the information here if possible. Thanks in advance.

Would anybody happen to have any music LP's (transferred) to MuTel Music, stuff from about, say about 1955 to 1969?

I've been chronicling the music use in the radio program, "Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar" and have been salvaging the music -- where I find cleaner parts of cues in other episodes and trying to salvage as much of the cues as possible, but I have been hitting brick walls in the last few days, wherein I have used up all available instances of a cue in all currently available episodes (minus ones with audio quality so bad, I can't use it), which has left me with cues that leave a lot to be desired.

The thread for the episodes with no original scoring (there is a separate thread for earlier episodes that have original scoring, on the General Discussion side):
