I just picked up this OOP Varese re-recording from trusty amazon marketplace--there's only 2 copies left there too, if you don't have it--snag it!!!

Good stuff, I was kind of hesitant for a long time based on a negative amazon review which is probably why I never bought it.

The Amazon review stated:

Regrettably, this recording turns out to be a light-weight and somniferous (especially in the center) rendering of Korngold's film symphony. It's instrumentation is impoverished with non-string instruments often among the missing. Rarely is the full orchestra utilized. If you are a Korngold enthusiast, buy it. Otherwise, pass.

But I quite like it actually. The percussion is really upfront which some may not like, but I think it gives it that extra "punch" so to speak, in some parts.

John Scott once told me that he was rather dissatisfied with the recording because Varèse didn't give him the rehearsal time he felt the orchestra needed to master the complexities of Korngold's music.

I just read that Charles Gerhardt was supposed to conduct this but then Varese changed their mind after George Korngold passed?

I consider it the worst Korngold recording I've ever heard. The quality of the actual music inevitably shines through in places, but at times the performance is not just poor, it's atrocious. I would give examples of where the orchestra screws up and finds it impossible to play in unison, but that would mean having to listen to it once more and I can't bring myself to suffer it again.
Plus, there's a dreadful amount of "sizzle" noise in the background of the latter tracks, particularly noticeable on headphones as tracks begin and end. Sounds almost like AM radio interference! Shocking stuff.

Just don't expect it to be much like the movie, even if you play the Korngold CD while you're reading it. The story goes that when Hervey Allen saw the Warner Brothers film he claimed it gave him a crackerjack idea for a new novel.

I love the film and I love the score, but not this recording.
The actual tracks exist. Why not release them?
