I`ve just watched a Murder She Wrote TV movie and Poetic Justice with very entertaining scores by Stanley Clarke.

After that I listened to the wonderful compilation CD Stanley Clarke At The Movies from 1995 with short groovy bass segments and even some orchestral cues of some of Clarke`s scores.

What a gifted bass player and film composer.

Too bad that so much of his stuff has not been released.

I like the sort of jazz-rock stuff that Clarke writes and performs, but I have to be honest his film scores don't impress me that much. I thought PASSENGER 57 was a big bore, for example.

Clarke's score for B.A.P.S. is on my "guilty pleasures" list. About 17 minutes of his big orchestral score was released on the soundtrack cd. The cue entitled "The Will" is an uplifting rendition of Clarke's beautiful theme for Mr. B. It is the kind of piece one can imagine being used to great effect as trailer music.

I'm with you Simon, I've always loved Clarke's work outside film. To say Clarke is a 'gifted' bass player is almost selling him short, he's a genius with the instrument whether it's stand up or electric bass, if you talk to any serious musician about bass playing you'll find Clarke's name mentioned alongside those of Charles Mingus and Jaco Pastorious amongst a handfull of others, his albums are full of only the very best musicians....John McLoughlin, Chick Corea, Jeff Beck, Roy Buchanan, Al DiMeola, Wynton Marsalis, Jan Hammer and many others.

I'd recommend his work with the band Return To Forever and his own albums Journey To Love and If This Bass Could Talk over any film score he's done.

Lately I have been stuck on the cue "Capital -- Naty's Theme" from PANTHER, featured on the compilation cd "Stanley Clarke: At the Movies": it is a big orchestral heroic track with a catchy theme.

Check it out here:
