I remember this as a wonderful tearjerker starring Jane Wyman as a self sacrificing nanny. It has a great ending too. The score by Waxman I recall as quite good but it has been quite a long time since Ive seen it - probably over 20 years -what about the music tracks - do they exist? and what has happened to the film - why is it never shown?

Some years ago I had the pleasure of working with Wyman and we had a little chat about this film which I had not seen at that point and wanted to very much. She very much wanted to see it again, herself, but couldn't find any copies around.

In the ensuing years I found a nice print of it, watched it, and indeed, it is one of those wonderful "tearjerkers" Hollywood used to turn out so long ago. I believe Wyman, as well as several others, were nominated for Oscars for this film.

It was a Wald-Krasna (Jerry Wald and Norman Krasna) Production for RKO release and joined several other W-K productions, including "Behave Yourself" with Farley Granger and Shelley Winters and "Clash By Night" with Barbara Stanwyck, Robert Ryan and Marilyn Monroe, in the Turner Entertainment/RKO Pictures library now at Warner Bros.

"Behave Yourself" appears to have fallen into public domain, "Clash By Night" runs occasionally on TCM (and apparently will be in the next Film Noir DVD box set to be put out by Warners), but "The Blue Veil" is nowhere to be seen, as you indicated.

I checked on this with Turner some years ago and while they apparently have print material, the problem is one of "underlying rights" which have not been cleared: The original story is by a French author (perhaps based on a novel), and there may even be a competing French film version of the material, but I'm not sure of this.

There are a number of other Turner-owned films which they have yet not been able to clear including "Flame and the Flesh" with Lana Turner, "Port of Seven Seas" with Wallace Beery and Maureen O'Sullivan (based on Pagnol's Marseille trilogy), "Night Flight", a Gable vehicle based on a work by St. Exupery, and "Letty Lynton", a Joan Crawford picture particularly known for its legendary fashions.

In the old days, when a studio wanted to make a film they were usually pretty thorough about tying up ALL rights to the material if they could do so. Sometimes it just wasn't possible and they had to go with the limited rights they were granted.

In the case of a big studio like MGM, when they wanted to re-make another studio's film, they would not only buy the rights, but the negatives as well. That's why the original negatives of RKO's ROBERTA (remade as LOVELY TO LOOK AT), Universal's two SHOW BOAT versions, Selznick's PRISONER OF ZENDA, Universal's IT'S A DATE (remade as NANCY GOES TO RIO), Paramount's two DR. JEKYLL AND MR HYDE versions, the French film BALLERINA (remade as THE UNFINISHED DANCE), the English GASLIGHT, and the French version of GIGI, among others, ended up in the MGM library.

The best we can do is hope that one day THE BLUE VEIL will be considered valuable enough on the video market to be paid for and cleared.

There are a couple of films I've been awaiting the appearance of on TURNER CLASSICS that should be in their domain--the 1956 RKO release, THE BOLD AND THE BRAVE with Wendell Corey, Don Taylor, and Mickey Rooney (with a fine score by Herschel Burke Gilbert), and the 1940 Warner Ronald Reagan film that seemed to run on WGN in Chicago about every month back in the 50's, INTERNATIONAL SQUADRON.

I haven't seen either of these flicks on TV since the early-to-mid 60's. Any ideas why, Manderley?

Manderley, you struck a nerve here - why we are not getting to see certain films.
It seens odd that Warner/turner cannot clear the rights to Port of seven Seas as theyown the rights to the remake (Fanny). I've always wanted to thee Port and it has a Waxman score to boot.
Other studios have some great titles stuck in rights limbo and we will probably never get to wsee them as the studios wont bother to renegotiate for titles most people no longer know _I'll Never gorget You, the Wayward Bus, the original 1944(?) Desert Song, Wheres Charley etc.

Just to update:

There was, indeed, a French film version of this, titled LA VOILE BLEU, made in 1942, directed by Jean Stelli, with a script by Francois Camaux, and starring Gaby Morlay.

It would be nice to see (and hear) both of these on DVD.

Add to those, Joe Caps, Fox's LYDIA BAILEY, which is reportedly being withheld because of political correctness.

Sad, too, because it has a nice score by Hugo Friedhofer.

Thanks, manderley & joecaps, for all the helpful info. The Blue Veil ranks up there with Imitation of Life , Madame X and To Each His Own as classic tearjerkers concerning Mother love - what a shame most younger filmgoers have never seen it or heard Waxman's score.

Just an update -- I read on imdb that the reason for this film being unavailable is that the heirs of Francois Campaux , author of Le Voile Bleu, have prevented the release of both the French and US film versions.

I was somewhat surprised to learn that Jane Wyman won a Best Actress Golden Globe for her performance over Vivien Leigh in A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE -- another reason for this film to be saved from oblivion --

I have a beautiful 16mm print of THE BLUE VEIL. It's a terrific film, very offbeat and Waxman's score is excellent but I think there are also some Webb cues dropped in.

here it is eight years later - and some of the mentioned films such as NIGHT FLIGHT , THE CONSTANT NYMPH, I'LL NEVER FORGET YOU & THE WAYWARD BUS have been released by Fox and Warners -- but still no sign of THE BLUE VEIL -

An Award winning film starring Oscar winners Jane Wyman and Charles Laughton with Natalie Wood, Joan Blondell, Richard Carlson, Vivien Vance and Agnes Moorhead -- I wonder if it will ever be saved from oblivion as well as the lost score by Franz Waxman .

The problem with THE BLUE VEIL is that, unlike the other RKO Wald-Krasner productions (CLASH BY NIGHT, LUSTY MEN etc), distribution rights expired in 1971 and did not transfer from Showcorp to Gold Key Entertainment. Warners bought the Gold Key package but BLUE VEIL is still, apparently, an orphan picture. My print dates from the early 60's when it was syndicated by Showcorp.

It's a lovely film. I saw it, once, on television, many years ago. I've long considered the score to be one of Waxman's loveliest.

Just an additional comment to Bob's very thorough rundown on THE BLUE VEIL in the thread referenced above - being a copyright claimant or owner does not automatically authorize distributorship. It's very possible that the Corwin estate holds partial claim on the picture, which is why it was separated from the other W-K productions. How it wound up on Netflix is bizarre and it would be interesting to know if there is a modern distributor credit that either precedes the RKO logo or follows the End Title. As for youtube, that's simply the wild west.

Twelve years later and still this wonderful film is currently unavailable (except for bad bootleg copies) as is the lovely Franz Waxman music ...

I have repeatedly asked Warner Archive about it and have been told that efforts continue to release it as well as THE MIRACLE(1959)...
