Just listening to this CD now. It's a really good score – fresh, dynamic, lovely, and never cloying.
What a shame that Convertino doesn't work much anymore, at least not in anything on the radar. (I know he did the recent indie "We Don't Live Here Anymore," which I plan to catch up with at some point.) I heard a rumor (unconfirmed!) that he has a difficult creative temperament, which might explain it. But I sure like a lot of his music!

Hello Schiffy. I was also thinking of Mr.Convertino recently when I put on the dvd of 'The Doctor'. I have enjoyed his music in years past and still think 'Children of a Lesser God' just missed getting him an Oscar Nomination. Perhaps if he'd gotten that nomination he'd have been thrust up higher in the 'pecking order' of composers in demand?? Regardless, I wish Randa Haines and Mr.Convertino would join up together again!
Couldn't agree more! Convertino has composed some outstanding scores, most of which have not seen the light of day on CD unfortunately, including A HOME OF OUR OWN, MILK MONEY, and THE WATERDANCE.
A few recommendations for scores which have been released: - MOTHER NIGHT is an excellent mix of Convertino's original music with that of Arvo Part (released on CD by Varese Sarabande) - WRESTLING ERNEST HEMINGWAY: one of his best (the CD is OOP but can usually be picked up for a fair price on eBay or half.com) - GUARDING TESS is a wonderful Mozart-influenced score that is absolutely gorgeous (OOP CD, usually goes for over $30 on eBay)
And keep an eye out for the promo CD of his score for WHERE'S MARLOWE?.
Most underused composer currently working. Wrestling Ernest Hemingway may crib a moment from wherever Horner cribbed part of the Cocoon theme from but it's a beautiful listen. He has a great ability to score nocturnal scenes in such a way that that undefinable quality of mystery is preserved. The Hidden is the action score that T2 should have been.
Any filmmakers who read this site--give this man a job!

A CD-R "promo" of Convertino's score has popped up several times on eBay in the past few months. It's well worth getting. Very nice piano and cello work.
I have a particular fondness for his ultra violent score for THE HIDDEN. Still hoping for a re-issue to fix the bad editing and sequencing of this album.
