I want to replace my husband's copy of War of the Worlds for Christmas. It became unplayable due to age (not his lol). I know there are two versions now; the original and "...The New Generation."
Is anyone on here familiar with the newer one and can give a critique or comparison to the original version? I am going to get the original but make pick up the new one as well if it's worth it.

TY
I say buy both - they are pretty much the same - you can hear them on youtube also - it's a matter of taste
No one can beat the gravitas that Richard Burton brought to the narration of the first release. And no one can really duplicate the romanticism that Justin Hayward brought, either. I have both versions and only listen to bits and pieces of the New Generation version. Nothing wrong with Liam Neeson's narration, though. Just different.
Yep, stick to the original. The newer version is okay, but Neeson's narration at times seems to be really buried in the mix. The original is still the best
As a fan of the original since it came out I was disappointed with Jeff's unnecessary 'update' of the album. There's no real comparison between the two, and despite the extra narration, Neeson is no substitute for Burton. The tagline to that old Galaxy chocolate bar commercial springs to mind: "Why have cotton when you can have silk?"
