Saw the Joel McCrea western "Colorado Territory" (directed by Raoul Walsh) a few nights ago. I enjoyed it very much – it's a film that had slipped under my radar over the years but proved to be a lot more impressive than the uninspiring title suggested. Something of a mini-epic with some fine performances. And the score by David Buttolph was very good, being another reminder of how neglected this excellent composer is. Strong themes, exciting action, flowing romantic sections, fine dramatic moments... high class stuff, all aided by some impressive canyon landscapes and almost noir-style interior scenes. Maybe this is one that the Chelsea/Rialto studio can help us with? Any info on this Ray?
Buttolph is definitely an underrated talent...better than some composers who get a lot more attention. Still happy to have Foxes of Harrow in my collection, though I fear if that sold poorly SAE may have been discouraged from producing more Buttolph releases.
Oh yeah, and I almost always love western scores of course.
If you have never heard David Buttolph's score for Randolph Scott's WESTBOUND made at WB in 1959 you are in for a treat. He did many scores at 20CF in the 40's for many genres and I hope we get a chance to hear them via a Kritzerland Director box set in the future.
I often confuse the Randolph Scott westerns. I see one listed in a program guide and I can hardly ever remember if I've already seen it. I'm not sure if I've seen Westbound or not. The good thing is, even if it turns out that I've seen them before, I end up watching them again because they are invariably great fun.

It is one of Scott's lesser efforts for director Budd Boetticher but it has a terrific western theme and a very beautiful actress by the name of Karen Steele.
David Buttolph was an excellent composer who has been very neglected. Any premiere Buttolph CD's would be great, especially his westerns. Is his music from HOUSE OF WAX available? I think it was mentioned it may no longer exist.
