I have never seen this film top to bottom, but I must have seen most of it over the years channel surfing.
I love Lalo Schifrin, but I never got around to picking this up.
So there is an expanded version that goes for ridiculous amounts - or, rather, an expanded version that sellers are trying to sell for ridiculous amounts.
Then there was the contemporaneous LP.
Then, there was the Aleph re-recording.
The expanded version is out of the question. I can get the LP for a reasonable amount. Would you say that I would be better off with the LP or the Aleph?
Also, why did the producers of the expanded version have to use a mint vinyl source for some of the tracks from the LP? Are the LP masters lost?
Depends how much of a purist you are I guess. I find the re-recording unlistenable as the tempo is too slow ( the early pressings were also terrible sound) . If you can’t get the Quartet 2cd version I’d go with the LP which at least is the original soundtrack. It might just be a short selection but all the great tracks are in there.

Thanks. To what degree will the slowness of the tempos be perceived if you're not really familiar with the music to begin with? Do they feel slow only if you know how the originals go, or do the slow tempos not even work on their own terms?
I don't notice the slow tempos, but I only really know the Aleph - I've seen the movie once plus some bits here and there over the years, but never had the LP. And wasn't motivated to get the Quartet set when it was available.
So it sounds like I'm a bit like you - wanted it for the Schifrin, so was satisfied with the Aleph. (Or you could say I don't know what I'm missing, but I don't care either.)

I think it’s probably if you know the music more. If you haven’t heard it really in the film it might be okay. I just couldn’t get the difference out of my head. I had the LP originally and pretty much played it to death so I just couldn’t connect with the new version.Just be careful what you’re buying though as I’m sure there was a whole thing about the rerecording’s first release being really muffled and bad sound quality. Can’t remember if there was an exchange program or they just issued it again with better sound.

It's beyond awful; slow, lugubrious, and utterly lifeless, with way too much reverb and irritatingly Slavic-tinged voices with the characteristic heavy L's and chestier singing as opposed to the original's creepy childlike affectation. If you go to Youtube and search for the main theme, both original and re recorded versions are there. It'll at least show you the difference
