Our wonderful cable provider no longer carries TCM at our level of service. Therefore I had to look elsewhere for the movies that I want to watch. Fortunately I was able to rely on Amazon streaming to provide my choices. I've lined up...

Battle Cry
From Here to Eternity
Operation Pacific

This is when I miss TCM.

Awesome suggestions. I got through Patton, Windtalkers and Midway today. Bloody hot here today so it kept me inside.

Keep it going...

EDWZOOMOM:

I watched BLACK HAWK DOWN tonight which is one of the best war movies.

My opinion about the movies you watched:

PATTON---perhaps the best war movie in my collection (but Coppola "Hollywoodized" some parts of the movie such as the scene in Sicily where Patton disregards orders from British General Alexander not to proceed to Messina, tells his subordinate that the message was garbled and then Patton captures Messina ahead of the British and greets Montgomery with the Army band playing. In fact, Patton had Alexander's approval for attacking Messina and there was no Army band playing when the British arrived.
Also, the scene after D-Day in Bradley's headquarters where Patton begs for a combat assignment after being punished for the soldier-slapping incidents (two soldiers were slapped, not one) is false. Patton was part of a decoy Army in England for D-Day and knew all along he would be part of the breakout from Normandy.
Also, the movie doesn't include the incident late in the war when Patton sent a task force to rescue his son-in-law, who was captured in North Africa, from a German POW camp deep behind German lines. Patton rejected his top tank commander's (Creighton Abrams) suggestion that the rescue force be much larger. Consequently, the rescue force was wiped out and his son-in-law was wounded during the rescue attempt and was recaptured.

WINDTALKERS---I was disappointed in this movie when I saw it years ago.

MIDWAY---lots of movie stars and does a good job of telling the story about the actual Battle of Midway----but the weak points are the silly Japanese fiancee subplot and the extremely inaccurate use of actual war film footage such as scenes showing Navy F6F Hellcats, SB2C Helldivers, etc. that weren't in use in 1942 and Charlton Heston flying an SBD Dauntless dive bomber and crashing at the end of the movie in an entirely different airplane.

My suggestions for the best non-fiction Memorial Day movies you haven't seen---13 HOURS and A BRIDGE TOO FAR (A BRIDGE TOO FAR has a cast that is hard to beat----Sean Connery, Robert Redford, Michael Caine, Anthony Hopkins, Lawrence Olivier, James Caan, Gene Hackman, Elliot Gould, Liv Ullman, Edward Fox, Ryan O'Neal, et al.).

Thanks for the feedback dragon. I watched the 3 I listed because they were on AMC and our cable provider has graciously chosen not to eliminate this channel from the lineup we have.

I agree with your assessment of Patton. I can ignore the Hollywoodization of portions of the film and focus on the stunning performance of George Scott and the equally stunning Goldsmth score.

I actually enjoyed Windtalkers. It's not the greatest war film to date but I thought the performances of Nick Cage and Adam Beach were solid and the Horner score well done.

I find Midway a bit tough to sit through and am not a big Heston fan. However the rest of the cast is amazing to watch and I particularly like the performance of Toshiro Mifune.

I obviously gravitate towards WWII films as you can see. I agree heartily with you about A Bridge Too Far. The cast is excellent and Addison's score is great.

I will add In Harm's Way to the list as well.

Okay, so I watched Midway again with my husband. I now officially agree with dragon that the son's fiancee saga was an annoying side story.

Howver, I actually found something that really bugged me more. At the end of the film when Henry Fonda and Hal Holbrook are reflecting on events, the crowd in the background looks like a group of tourists visiting the Universal Studios' lot in 1976. No attempt was made to make the extras look like Hawaii 1942.

This was my only gripe.

I watched John Huston's LET THERE BE LIGHT. It will tear your heart out.

This film was suppressed by the DOD when originally filmed. Too honest.
