Escape was the first Apes film I saw at the cinema, followed by Battle. Conquest was a AA so as a pre-teen couldn't get in to see it. We got the tv series in the UK and it was a massive hit unlike the misfire it was in the US. It gave rise to double bills of the earlier films on rerelease so I got to see the first two several times. Conquest still eluded me until the series was released on dvd!
I was indeed slightly traumatised by the sad ending of the ape couple, but only reacted badly to the last shot as an adult later.
My favourite memory during the success of the tv show, among the Marvel weekly comic we got (reprinted from the US magazines), knitted sweaters (with ape faces on) and cheapo ape masks, was a guy wandering around Barnsley Market one Saturday afternoon with a tray of quite shoddy looking ape glove puppets, shouting "come an' get yer Galens..come and get yer Galens"!
