That said, Man of Steel is the new era Superman movie we needed.* It's awful that WB reverted to being a bunch of pantywaists who ixnayed Snyder's take after being completely onboard with it.

Not bringing in much money at the box office will do that. Man of Steel and Batman v Superman were at best modest hits when WB wanted/needed them to be blockbusters. Of course with Justice League it shifted from something polarizing among fans to something few people liked. Hopefully some day someone will figure out how to make Superman a success again.

*If one requires proof, look no further than the unforgivably pastiche hot mess that is called Superman Returns — a waste of talent (minus Singer's) and money every which way.

The only proof that Superman Returns provides is that WB can make a crappy Superman movie. Something we already knew. Still, I love Ottman's score to it.

The bottom line is that when you reboot 30-40 years later, you have to do it from the ground UP. And not draw from only one comics Age.

Absolutely. Using this technique was what made the Donner film such a big success. The variety of interpretations also allowed Man of Steel to be as different from the Donner film as it was.

I played my long-shelved Rhino edition, as promised, and both physical CDs are in perfect working order. They're as good as new.

I think Jim Phelps must have gotten a rare defective one, or possibly a counterfeit set, the kind you hear about being made in China.

Waiting for it to show up someday on one of my streaming services. No commercials, no additional costs.

Or you could just rent or buy the blu ray.Its one of the better looking blu rays on the market. The Smallville battle is the best Superman action scene ever filmed.

I'll wait for streaming, and if it never comes, well, Gloria Gaynor, take it away!

Yeah, I love Superman the Movie, but it really does feel dated in a way I kinda didn't expect from when I first saw it. For me, Superman II even more so. That surprises me, because a lot of other movies from the period that I still love don't feel as dated.

I haven't seen The Man of Steel (except the big spoiler ending), but I did see Bats v. Supes, which didn't make me feel in a hurry to see MoS. But I did think Cavill made a good Superman, so one day I will. I suspect it also will feel dated in a decade or two.

MoS is so much better than BvS. I think Snyder didn't get as much control over MoS so it has a greater realism (serendipity?) that BvS. People say that this is a "dark" Superman. The MOVIE may be darker (the stakes are quite high) but Superman is still pretty sunny. He's The Good Guy.

And it may be no Williams Superman but man I love that score!

Sean, I bet the Blu-ray's super cheap by now. I bet you could score it on Amazon for under $10 shipped!

Zimmer did a fantastic job!

The Smallville battle is the best Superman action scene ever filmed.

One word: Faora.

It was obviously defective. Disc 1 just "up and died" one day. frown

However, I bought the Rhino CD at my local Barnes & Noble store, not at the usual, seedy, "shooting gallery" heroin den where I purchased most of my film score CDs in those days.

You gotta update that "stock" Superman collection photo, Zap. wink

I enjoy the Man of Steel score just as much as I do the Williams classic, and hold it in just as high a regard.

She's especially nasty in the DC Phantom Zone miniseries by Steve Gerber and Gene Colan, a (near) masterpiece that is largely forgotten by comic book fans, and almost certainly never read or heard of by the FSM Collective.

Not everyone. I enjoyed that series quite a bit. You may recall we were discussing this series at length when you were posting your reviews of each issue. Granted, two people does not equal a quorum, but there are a few of us who enjoy that series.

I do love the Smallville fight in Man of Steel--it's really the only part of the movie that got me excited, and to me it showcased what a great villain Faora was vs. Michael Shannon, who I found very one-note and unconvincing as Zod (and I love his work in other films).
I just thought the rest of the movie was a squandered opportunity. Just compare the use of Pa Kent in Man of Steel vs. Superman: The Movie. In just a few seconds of screen time, Glenn Ford provides a perfect mentor and a key motivation that makes the 1978 film's deus ex machina ending actually work because of the way Superman has to make a moral choice between his earthly father's words of wisdom and the orders of his real father.
In Man of Steel Pa Kent provides, what? Advice to allow yourself to be swallowed up by a tornado so no one will suspect you're an alien? It's just muddled and does nothing for the film dramatically. Yes, the original is dated but it's still grounded by Christopher Reeve's performance and the incredible score, neither of which have yet been equaled IMO.

I appreciate all this encouragement, but I've just not been interested enough in what I've seen of Man of Steel (previews, final battle with Zod, a couple of random scenes here and there) to do anything but click on a Netflix/Amazon Prime placard and have it start playing, and even then not so much. Plus I'm moving away from buying physical copies of movies (and books, and even music besides our little soundtrack nook, but not comic books!).

I'm glad it has hit the spot for you all, but I'm well satisfied with the Marvel U, and just do the DC movies when they meet my lowest standards. The TV shows I like better, esp. Flash - watched all of that, and slowly catching up with all the others. But then, they're all on Netflix wink

PS I just realized I have watched the Smallville fight, forgot that I had. It's well done, but again just doesn't entice me to see the rest. We can't all love the same thing, and that's ok.

Reeve's Clark Kent is comic genius.
What other actor has even come close to portraying the dual personality of the character?
Nuff said.

When you read that, you had to know I wasn't referring to you, Sean Nethery, or drop_forge. I was thinking specifically of those mainstream, establishment FSMers who never post on the Non-Film Score Discussion side aka The Interesting Side of This Forum. smile

Which is exactly the reason why i respect Henry Cavill so much as an actor given that he was wise enough not to imitate Reeve in any way and instead provided a different portrayal.

We can have different interpretations of comic book characters.
