On Blu-Ray next month. Lots of music from the soundtrack, not used in the theatrical cut, used in the extended TV cut.

Amazing they were able to do this. I had a vhs tape I made as a kid the first time it aired on ABC that burned itself into my memory.

Me too. I also made a cassette tape of the soundtrack, dialogue, music and sound FX, and listened to it for years. I know it backwards.

A DREAM COME TRUE!
Who would have believed it?

The KCOP version that aired in the early 1990s was when I recorded it on video, and then I got a friend to help me, record the film onto audio cassette, so I also know every bit of dialogue which is extended!

I really love the extended scenes of dialogue involving Lex Luthor and Eve Teschmacher.

I am sure that every person here mostly owns the new box set of "Superman The Music"... a scene I would die for - is the Helicopter Rescue!

On the score CD, there is more music included - prior to Clark Kent switching to Superman, at least 20 seconds of music - that music that John Williams composed for the scene was never revealed! I would (and I am sure a lot of Superman Fans out there), would like to see the complete scene as John Williams composed it.

Still, my greatest movie in the entire universe, finally gets what it deserves. THANK THE LORD THAT I WILL BE ABLE TO SEE THIS IN IT'S CORRECT ASPECT RATIO, AND IN BLU RAY!!!!!!!!

Here is some information worth looking at about this new Blu Ray (Thank You Jim Bowers): http://www.capedwonder.com/superman-the-movie-extended/

Have the extended versions not already been part of the DVD box many years ago? If not, what are the differences (I can't keep track of it anymore with all those releases, re-releases, same releases but now on Bluray tec.).

I can briefly tell you the differences in the timings. The theatrical version ran 127 minutes. The version currently available on DVD/BR runs 143 minutes and this "new" version, which aired on television years ago but has never been available on DVD or Blu-Ray, runs 188 minutes.

From what I remember of this really long version that's different from the 143 minute version, there's a short sub-plot about a Kryptonian "cop" being sent to arrest Jor-El in his home, only to be destroyed along with everyone else on Krypton.

There's also some more footage toward the end of earthquake destruction.

There's a scene of Secret Service agents being notified of the missile going off course, and alerting the President.

There's a short sub-plot about Lex Luthor feeding his pet lions(?) -- including an attempted meal of his mistress.

More bits and pieces of dialogue throughout the film.

That's all I can remember off the top of my head. Hope that's some help... smile

I'm confused, does the original theatrical version exist on BR? Also did they sh*t can the DVD audio track which added all kinds of unnecessary sound effects?

I'm confused, does the original theatrical version exist on BR? Also did they sh*t can the DVD audio track which added all kinds of unnecessary sound effects?

A: It is on blu-ray in the movie anthology box (available in a region free import for less than 40 bucks on most e-retailers).

B: They kept your old mix (in 2.0)

C: Said old mix is a complete disaster lacking in overall fidelity and stereo separation. For one the music is frequently in mono, reverbed to hell, or with its channels reversed. Also the dialogue tracks are spread over the entire front soundstage in equal volume as opposed to being in squarely in the phantom center. Ultimately only worth it for dewy-eyed but ultimately misplaced nostalgia and hyper conservatism.

Sorry, can you please clarify. When you say the "old mix" are we talking about the Blu Ray audio or the audio as heard in the theatrical release of the film? Or are they one and the same? Either way sounds like there's no good representation of the original audio track on home video in any format.

From memory:
• There's a scene of full-scale houses rolling on their foundations during the earthquake, with people running out of doors and jumping out of windows.
• Extended comic bits with Lex, Miss T and Otis.
• Extended destruction of Krypton.
• Extended Kryptonian Council conversation.
• Kryptonian police dispatched to Jor-El's laboratory.
• Extended pursuit of Otis through Grand Central Terminal.
• Extended Smallville sequences.
• Extended construction of the Fortress of Solitude.
• The scene where the XK-101 missile flies around Superman.
• All the deleted scenes from the 2001 DVD release will be incorporated, including Miss T being lowered into the monster pit. (Earlier in the film you'll also see Lex singing "You Must Have Been A Beautiful Baby" while playing the piano, as Miss T tries to seduce him.)
The beauty is that all the cinematography will be intact in 2.40:1. It will look amazing, even if much of it is padding. Also, a lot of original music which is on the soundtrack release, but never used in the theatrical release, is integrated into the film, very noticeably on Krypton just before Jor-El launches the Starship.
SUPERMAN fans will be very happy with this release. No one has ever seen these additional and extended scenes in any ratio other than 4:3, so you'll be seeing the missing half of the cinematography for the first time ever.

I think there's also a scene of Lex's underground defense system. Where he barrages Superman with weapons of fire and ice meant to prevent him from entering his lair.

A detailed analysis of extra scenes in the TV version, scenes added to the Director's Cut and assorted deleted odds and ends:

I prefer the "old mix" because they don't have the added sound effects which are always louder than the rest of the soundtrack, drowning out dialog and music. Also because they were not there in 1978. I prefer the option to hear the mix I grew up with on VHS - which this ISN'T but is close. The Krypton explosion is still wrong.

And really, it's not so much a mess that it bothers me. It's just not super hi-fidelity or whatever.

Correct, that sequence is in the deleted scenes on the 2001 DVD release.

The theatrical version of the film has always run 143 minutes. The 127-minute version appeared on the film's first videocassette release, which was shortened to better fit on a single cassette. No actual story material was cut from this release. Instead, the film was "time-compressed" by speeding up the opening credits and scenes with no dialogue, and the film's closing credits were omitted.

Now I'm confused. So how long is the mid-length version currently/commonly available on DVD and Blu-Ray? (BTW, thanks for the info, Bob! Always like your posts.)

That sure is a disaster, I didn't realise this was the case.

Apparently the old letterbox S: TM US laserdisc (which I happily own) has the 70mm 6 channel sound mix, though obviously mixed down to Dolby Surround matrix. I'll have to haul it out to check. I always preferred the "pshhhh" sounds of the titles on the old mix to the reimagined and OTT DVD effects.

In any case I'm absolutely thrilled that this release is happening. I don't think anyone expected this to ever see the light of day again, and in HD widescreen no less! Hopefully SII will also receive an extended release.

Nostagia plays tricks with memory. Why? Not just remembering event but feelings attached to. For example, remember plenty a time where thought cue was longer or different than what hearing on new release. Still think best capricorn one was on lp with not so high end stereo or on tv with one speaker. One release Intrada??? Or ??? Came very close.

Wondering how many millions of vcrs recording those special tv directors cuts for ST TMP or Superman. And if didnt record, decade or more before released on some media if ever released.

I couldn't be more excited for this. I was an obsessive fan of this movie when I was a kid. Back in the late 90's/early 2000's, I used to trade for VHS tapes of this and other TV versions on the old SupermanCinema.co.uk boards. Good times!! I've bought countless versions of this from VHS through the DVD/bluray releases and collections.

I never EVER thought I'd see this released. Ever.

This is a definite, IMMEDIATE pre-order the moment it goes live.

WOW.
