Very hard question.

Is this 'best actor in westerns' or 'best western actor' or ... actor in the best westerns?

I mean everyone's been in westerns including John Cleese! Some outstandingly skilled thespians with great talent and charisma like Audie Murphy appeared mostly in mediocre B movies. Burl Ives did very few, but look at those performances.

Steve McQueen!

Other fine actors that were in westerns that I liked were Walter Brennan, Warren Oates, Strother Martin and Mercedes McCambridge.

But that would have made it "The Magnificent Two."

good choices msmith.

but you do realise there is going to be a reason why they dont count as real western stars and, ergo, cannot be allowed, dont you?
ditto Terence Hill, etc. All will be explained to you unbelievers!

FSM idiots. I see that no one has the stones enough to choose John Wayne as their favorite Western film actor, so I will. Sure, he was a draft-dodging hypocrite, but he was still the best Hollywood drip to ever done hat and spurs (and thankfully, pants).

FSM idiots.

Oh wait, John Wayne isn't a Western film actor, is he? I know, because someone will chime in and tell me so.

Nah. John Wayne.

Yeah, definitely John Wayne. Just as sure as the turnin' of the Earth.
