Have any of you seen the series THE FALL? (Acorn series is association with the BBC.)
It is mainly filmed in Belfast, Ireland. Gillian Anderson plays a "supposedly" savvy detective who is trying to capture a serial killer played by Jamie Dornan. He is very creepy and plays a killer who stalks and kills women of a certain type. He is also a married man with two children.

I’ve seen the first two seasons, and I plan on ordering the third and final season which was shown in October 2016.

This series moves very slowly, and at times, I think very clear clues are overlooked, but it still holds my attention. Dornan is slimy, scary and very good. Gillian Anderson seems cool, collected and rather cold. I guess that is her character, but sometimes I want to pinch her to make her emote a little more. I’ve enjoyed the secondary characters.

Anyone else viewed this series?

Hi Joan,

I thought the first series was some of the best TV I had ever seen ... utterly compelling with a truly incredible performance from Jamie Dornan (an actor at the time I had not heard of) ... easily the most creepy "real" person to appear in a TV drama. Of course my liking for Ms. Anderson helped somewhat ... an actress who continues to impress (apart from her beauty!) in all roles.

My wife kept with it despite the subject matter and both of us felt that series 2 was a little off the mark in comparison ... still very good but not quite there.

And so, series 3: my wife bailed out (she does not really like such realism and did not want to follow what she perceived as the downward spiral of one of the secondary characters ...) but I found it more enjoyable than series 2 with a story-arc which surprised me.

i won't detail any spoilers but will say that one of the highlights (apart from continuing to watch the lovely Ms. Anderson!) was the formality of procedures and the fact that despite being in charge Stella Gibson did not get to make all of the decisions.

The supporting cast was, as you suggest, superb throughout and I think the filmmakers should be proud of their product.

I love this show.

Series 3 became available on Netflix recently and I watched the whole thing.

The Ending was somewhat unexpected, but worked for me.

My only hope is that a new series is commissioned with her character having to tackle a new case.

Thank you both for chiming in. I too felt that series 2 was not as strong as the first season, but I was still engaged.

Also, thanks for not giving any spoilers for Season 3. I'm waiting for a DVD release. So far season 3 DVD's can only be played on regional players that few own in the U.S.A.

I am glad I am not the only one who has liked it, but people do have to be aware that it moves slowly at times with secondary stories as well as developing details about the two main characters.

Bill, whilst you may favour yourself with a viewing of the series, remember that it is for Mature adults. (Hey, look at me. I’m speaking British with whilst and favour. TG will be so proud of moi.smile) On the other hand, the killer is rather pervy, so you might find a brother-in-arms.

Ah, yes, but then you ruin things by describing the series as (sometimes) slow. It's not slow ...

... it's British.

It takes its time developing characters whilst telling the story and accordingly garners favour with its audience.

A jolly good show, I'd say! smile

And, to be honest ... I don't think calling Dornan's character pervy gets anywhere close.

Good point, Mitch. It did seem slow in places, but I was pretty patient most of the time and enjoyed all the details. I find a lot of foreign films move at a slower pace than American films. Americans demand too much action I'm afraid.

I guess "pervy" is a bit too gentle.

Later, I'll be back and place in blackout a clue that I thought was missed, but that extended the show and tension.

IMDB said it was filmed in Northern Ireland and Belfast. I love seeing the city and landscapes.

"What an absolute shower." Huh? Is that British speak? I hate to reveal my ignorance, but I haven't got a clue what that means.

I too have enjoyed the show very much, and I hope her character continues. She may seem cold, but a lot is going on under the surface. I thought the 3rd season was excellent.

mgh, glad to hear from you. Now I must get season 3. I should "google" around to see if Anderson will continue on as the detective with a new case.

I see Bill gave me homework so that I could understand English. Sigh. smile

“The Fall” was one of the best things on TV for ages.

Anderson & Dornan were terrific and kept me glued, nay...mesmerised throughout!

The tension and the atmosphere were just incredible.

That last episode had me shouting out. WOW!

If you enjoyed this, you MUST catch up with another big BBC Hit..”Happy Valley”.

Set in the Calder Valley region of West Yorkshire (the local police call it Happy Valley, because of the drug problems they have to deal with there.), it centres on the local Police Force and the effects their job has on their personal lives.

In an amazing cast, Sarah Lancashire is outstanding as the harassed sergeant, who has to deal with (amongst other things),a psychopathic thug threatening her and her family (James Norton).

Two series, so far, and a third one is promised.

I for one, can’t wait.

My wife & I binge watched all 3 seasons of The Fall over the holidays. We watched it on Netflix. Season 1 was very good. Season 2 was good. Season 3 was okay. Each season was a drop in story quality (IMO), maybe that's why it's called The Fall. smile

Joan if you have Netflix I'd recommend watching it that way before buying a DVD set. Please share your thoughts after watching season 3.

Glad to hear new voices that enjoyed this series. I’m excited to see Season 3. Sorry, I don’t have
Netflix. (Bill, homework is delayed too.)

To me in Season 2, there was one obvious clue that would have lead Gillian to the killer much sooner, and it was ignored. However, it did extend the season into 6 episodes. I’ll try to black it out.

The killer’s daughter and wife saw him on TV. He and his daughter were walking into a park where he was really following his next victim. The wife said he had to go to the police, which he did. A detective told him to WRITE up his observations, and he just started writing. Wait a minute. If I remember correctly, he had already sent a letter to a victim’s father. They had that letter. Also, the killer just sat down and wrote his observations. No one ever compared his writing to the father’s letter. It seemed like a very obvious clue to me.

Thanks for the recommendation of Happy Valley. Looks good.

I enjoyed all 3 seasons and yes it's difficult to follow up the taut Season 1. I never found the show slow nor Andersons character "cold". The show was probably about as realistic as a procedural crime thriller can be without becoming ponderous or sensational. As far Anderson's character she was steely and tough, and to me always on the edge of breaking. But she kept her resolve in a male dominated, if not sexist, system.

Taken as a whole, it's a solid **** show.
