I purchased the itunes download of this score because I love the film. This score is really a nice little forgotten gem. My favorite tracks are probably Hoffa Trailer, Trucker's Salute, and Hoffa End Credits. The music is really inspirational especially the trailer music. I love at the 1:30 mark when the main theme comes blasting in full gear. That piece of music alone can get you revved up to do any goodwill speech or deed.

What do you guys think?

I agree with your assessment. Brilliant score by David Newman with tremendous composed-through end titles. I'll have to dig out my cd...

I get this one confused with F.I.S.T. for some reason. Both are excellent scores.

I saw HOFFA back when it came out and I do remember that I thought the music was very good. Have not seen the movie since or heard any part of the score on its own. Probably worth another visit.

Newman (and Stephen H. Burum's photography) are the only reason to ever watch this.

Hoffa is a great score that seems to be seldom spoke about.
Must dig it out!

And Jack Nicholson's performance as well, in fairness.

Too bad there's just about no chance of La-La Land or another label giving this the Speed treatment.

I like the big cues that people have talked about _as music_, but I wonder more and more about how appropriate the music is for the film itself. Although Jimmy Hoffa undeniably did a lot of good for the teamster's union, he was also a fairly dark and tough figure with, as the movie shows, some major personality defects and ties to the mob, etc. Again, I love the theme, but is playing such a stately, noble theme under such a guy the right way to go? It clearly expresses how director Danny DeVito feels about his subject, I suppose, but does that undercut some of the complexity and controversy of who the man was and what he did?

Great score. I listened to it again randomly last month, and it holds up as one of Newman's best efforts. Too bad he was typecast as the wacky comedy guy (and forced to copy the temp tracks to an alarming degree) back in the 90's...he should have been given more chances as a straight dramatic composer.

Couldn't have said it better myself. Fantastic movie, fantastic score, and the trailer music still inspires a rousing emotional reaction.

My Dad is a member of the Teamsters and steward through his work at a warehouse. I can tell you that a lot of the benefits my Dad enjoys is because of Hoffa. So that isn't a dark name around here. Almost everything he did was for the working man and he really helped push the labor movement forward. I'm not excusing the darker sides of his life by any means. It's a tough one but I have no problem admiring what he accomplished. Maybe you could call him a thug for the people? Sometimes I wonder if he we would have been able to get the Teamsters recognized without the mob he would have.

I don't know a ton of his work, but based on this I'm inclined to agree with you.

As for David Sones, yea I wonder if this will ever get a special treatment. I don't know if it's legally logical but I could picture this being an Intrada release or this one held onto by Varese?

I belong to a union as well, and understand fully what they do and how they allow the ever-shrinking middle class to exist. I'm not denigrating any of that, but again wonder if Newman's heroic theme doesn't kind of oversimplify a man who appears to have been very complicated.

I work for the same company my Dad does so I belong to a union too. They really are the backbone of the blue collar workers. As for it oversimplifying him? Possibly because there were so many sides to him that nobody ever understood. He did a lot of work with the mob and a lot of it was for a good cause. How do you define a man like that? Is he a hero or a villain? I think the theme is good to represent that heroic side to him that did all he could to help the working class.

I never saw the movie, but back in the early '90s a local film critic singled out the score for a rare bit of praise. That the music would be mentioned at all really struck me, and I bought the CD. "Hoffa Trailer" is by far my favorite track here. Just tremendous.

I highly recommend that you watch the film. It's not too long and it has some pretty impactful moments. The scenes where Hoffa battles Robert F. Kennedy are as intense and real as arguments can get in a movie. Jack Nicholeson's performance is so authentic too.

I forgot about David Newman's score to Hoffa. Fox Records I believe released the sdtk? An expanded sdtk would be nice. Now I have to add the flick to my Netflix que.

I recall the music from Hoffa appearing in almost every trailer in the 90s. Like, even more than Bishop's Countdown.
